Hi Friends,

Welcome to my new column: Sister Indica RECOMMENDS where I’ll tell you what music YOU need to be listening to.

I live and breathe music and when I’m not nunning it up as a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence, I’m probably at a show somewhere in Hollywood.  Hell, sometimes I even combine the two!

I love all music: from opera to grunge, bluegrass to Motown.  My preferences are usually indie rock, indie folk or indie dance (see a theme here) but I do get into some good ole pop music as well…you never know what I’m going to hit you with so keep coming back!

Speaking of ‘good ole pop music’, my first column features a pop FEAST: Adore Delano’s debut album, the 11-track “Till Death Do Us Party”, now available on iTunes and Amazon!

If Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry could be thrown into a blender with a few shots of testosterone – and tequila – you’d pour out a glass of Adore Delano.  Her finger is firmly on the pulse of her generation’s sensibilities – she knows what the kids want to hear, she has a clear point of view (she’s a ratchet mermaid who gives zero fucks) and has a stunning look – a successful combination.  Her album is already #1 on the Dance charts and it came out yesterday, not that I’m surprised.  I did predict she’d have the best post-Drag Race album, but whatevs.

I loved watching Adore’s boy counterpart Danny on American Idol, but my biggest criticism was his choice of song.  That amazing voice was not being paired with material that would really showcase it.  That’s not a problem on “Til Death Do Us Party”.  These are songs that fit Adore’s voice and attitude and she had a heavy hand in the writing process, which is apparent.  She clearly needed more time to develop and a shift in how she was marketing herself, a great lesson to all: patience IS a virtue.

Most of the pop albums I hear have two or three stand-out tracks – obvious singles – and the rest is filler.  There isn’t one bit of filler on this album – and with Adore’s youth and great skin, not in her mug either.  I honestly can’t pick a song on “Till Death Do Us Party” that I don’t like.  There are some I like more than others, but there isn’t one track I’d tell her to cut.  And that’s remarkable.

Another note: when autotune came out years ago, it was a cool vocal effect rather than a crutch for those devoid of real vocal talent.  I admire and appreciate Adore’s production team using autotune for its original purposes – and sparingly.  This voice doesn’t need the crutch…it stands firmly on its own.  Shit, it even backflips and does a death-drop!

Of the 11 tracks, “I Adore U” is the clear winner – and has quickly become one of my favorite songs of 2014…and it will stay on repeat until the “next great thing” comes out. Other stand-out tracks include the single “DTF”, future singles “Party” and “Hello, I Love You”, “Calling All Goddesses”,  and “My Address is Hollywood”.  Maybe she’ll do a Beyonce and give us a video/single for every song.  It sure would be fun to see her and Alaska do something for their song “I Look Fuckin Cool”, which is as fun, quirky and upbeat as you can imagine.  I’m also becoming more and more obsessed with “Give Me Tonight”, originally released by Shannon and the only cover on the album.

All-in-all, I give “Till Death Do Us Party” 4 out of 5 Smoke Rings, which is almost as good as it gets.  Go out and get it NOW and stay tuned for more Sister Indica RECOMMENDS – a lot of great music is coming out this year so I’m going to have a LOT to talk about!
