It would be very easy for us to do a collection that everybody would like and not criticize. But criticism is a part of life. You have to take it.” -Donatella Versace

Hello Not Safe 4 Werk! My name is Spencer Williams, your Senior Fashionista Correspondent! Welcome to my premiere post of “Spencer’s Spotlight” where I bring you up to speed on what’s in style in the fashion world, help you see a little better when you get dressed in the dark, talk about some of my favorite topics, and bring together some interviews with fabulous artists and well….. people I enjoy! I am so happy to be here and very thankful that Chiffon let me be a part of this website (please send help I am locked in Chiffon’s basement).

Now that we have gotten the introductions out of the way, let’s talk about what’s new in the fashion world!

1. Lady Gaga: The Face of Women’s Versace SS 2014

This season, three of my favorite things came together for the ultimate fashion experience, Lady Gaga, The House of Versace, and the always amazing Donatella. For a while now Gaga and Donatella have been really close friends. It was only a matter of time before they came together for this beautiful collaboration. I mean lets be real, Gaga published her song “Donatella” on her new album “Artpop”… it was bound to happen. The advertisement campaign brought a photo set of all photo sets. All it is, is Gaga modeling on a beautiful couch showing off some beautiful Versace while waving around her beautiful Donatella inspired wig. A recipe for perfection if you ask me…. Check out one of these photos here and on NS4W’s homepage.

2. The “Kimye and Vogue” Controversy

The world stopped for a few minutes when the April edition of Vogue was released… Kim Kardashian and Kanye West took the spotlight with the cover photo. Some people loved it… on the other hand, many hated it! The Vogue magazine cover is known for showcasing some of the fashion industries prime assets. So it was a huge shock when Kimye were revealed on the new cover. Now to be fair, they both look great in their cover shoot. There is no way of saying that they do not look good. Kim is hot and Kanye is well… Kanye. But in my opinion, I don’t feel like they are worthy of the Vogue cover for just being famous celebrities. I mean some of the celebrities to be seen on this cover include Janice Dickinson, Tina Turner, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, and even Meryl Streep. So to me it seems a bit off-putting that this couple was to be featured on the magazine. It might have been a bit easier to handle if it was just Kim on the cover. But let’s be real… what has Kim accomplished that should be worthy of a Vogue cover besides having a perfect butt… Yes Kanye is a successful man in today’s society.. but at the end of the day he is just another  rapper who has a ridiculous amount of money, a hot girlfriend, and a auto-tune feature that Cher couldn’t even pull off… oh dear I just sinned… of course Cher could pull it off.

All in all, great photo-shoot… but poor choice by Vogue though. To me, it feels kind of like a slap in the face to all of the magnificent people who have graced the cover of Vogue…

In the end I do respond to my own instincts. Sometimes they’re successful, and obviously sometimes they’re not. But you have to, I think, remain true to what you believe in.” -Anna Wintour / Vogue
