Now if you knew me, you would know that all I listen to is music from the 80′s with the exception of a few artists like Lady Gaga, Robyn, Lana Del Rey, and Amy Winehouse. So the other day while playing through my shower playlist and doing a sickening lip-sync to “If I Could Turn Back Time”, I realized that my taste in 80′s music was so exceptional that I just had to break it down for you guys and explain who I think the top six artists were and why! Now of course there are so many I could choose to put on this countdown, but I have to cap it off somewhere!  The Top Six Artists that made me WISH I was alive during the 80′s! Lets get into it!

3. Culture Club

That’s right! The group starting off the top three is none other than the legendary CULTURE CLUB! Let’s all release that deep breath! you have been holding in for the past two weeks! You all know and love this beloved 80’s pop band… and if you don’t you probably have been living under a tree stump.

I love Culture Club! Every single song of theirs is loads of fun! I can’t tell you how many times I have screamed “Karma Chameleon” at the top of the lungs while driving or how many times I have acted like I was performing at Madison Square Garden while singing “Move Away”. Culture Club is just always there to set up the mood for a good night!

Now lets not forget the genius of Boy George, the star of Culture Club! Yes all of the other group members are cool, but Boy George was certainly the Beyonce/J.T/Diana Ross of the group. I could look at 80’s Boy George forever. He was such an interesting character. The hair, the makeup, the outfits, and the voice! Gahhhh! I like to think that if I were even alive during the 80’s, this is the look I would be rocking.

Now from my scientific investigations, I have concluded that basically everyone and their mother loves Culture Club. But in high school I was taught to test every hypothesis with a experiment or something like that so we can get results ? So I decided to chat with Not Safe 4 Werk’s very own Senior Nunsense Correspondent Sister Indica and see what she had to say about Culture Club!

“Boy George was one of my first role models – and now he follows me on Twitter. Talk about surreal! The music of Culture Club was on regularly in our house because my Mom is such a big fan. My favorite song is Church Of The Poison Mind…though I’m sure that comes as no surprise!” – Sister Indica

Oh Indica, you and your nun humor! But I love to rock out to “Church of a Poison Mind” as well as the many such as “Karma Chameleon”, “Move Away”, “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya”, “Victims” and “The War Song”. I’ve basically had “The War Song” stuck in my head through the duration of writing this article.

Now for me, this article will feel incomplete without bringing in a very special person. I can’t even think about Culture Club without of course think of my dear mother who, from what I understand, lived and breathed Culture Club back in her day! I am excited to say that she took a break from her Taco Bell Griller happy hour so she can say a few words! MOTHA…HAS ARRIVED.

Sometime back in the early 80’s I had a mad crush on Boy George. I believe I was in the fifth grade and I thought  that all it would take was a 10 page letter drenched in perfume and sealed with my lipstick stain too get his attention…. Within the letter I also mentioned  how much I would love to be a back-up singer for the band. I couldn’t sing a note, but maybe that wouldn’t matter because once Boy George read my letter he would fall madly in love with me. Little did I know, my days would consist of sitting on my bedroom floor, staring at all my culture club posters, listening to the boom box, and my “totally awesome” Culture Club cassettes. I even choreographed my own little “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” dance. Culture Club played a huge part on my childhood/teen years. Looking back, I remember all the best friend bonding I had while singing every song out of tune, but having so much fun doing it. These are the days I will remember fondly, and somehow wish I could go back to the future to relive them. I guess for now I will hang on to the memories and put in my CD’s or turn on the satellite radio and be transported back to the best decade… the 80’s!! -Christine Williams
