The NotSafe4Werk.com Contestant Interviews: Lacy Lane

Hi Lacy! Can you tell me about yourself and your drag history?

Wow! Where do I even start? My name is Lacy Lane, and I’ll be celebrating my 3rd drag birthday this coming November! Happy Birthday to me! As a boy, I’m a 25-year-old working in a 2nd/3rd grade classroom in Detroit. So basically, my day job and my night job/hobby are both super awesome. I grew up in Detroit and just recently moved back here after living in New York City to attend law school for the past couple years. Lacy was born in NYC, actually! The transition from partying and performing in NYC to doing drag out of my apartment in Detroit has been pretty frustrating, and that’s exactly why I wanted to join the Miss NotSafe4Werk.com Drag Pageant It’s been on hell of a ride, but I’m really proud of everything I’ve been able to accomplish and have had so much fun!

Your image is everything. You’re obviously inspired a lot by food, where did this come from?

Haha thank you! Honestly, despite the fact that I’ve always loved food, using food as a label for my drag aesthetic really snuck up on me and happened organically. It started during my time on Tumblr’s Drag Race, an online competition for baby queens looking to hone in on and grow in their craft. Our first challenge was a pastry challenge, and that was the very first time I did my birthday cake look! From there, I unknowingly started throwing hints of food into several of my looks until I ended the competition with a fully-realized McDonald’s look. I think that’s when I really found myself as an artist. I’m a campy, curvy, exaggerated clown queen, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Would you believe me if I told you I started off trying to be “fish”? Me neither! But I pranced around as a trouty no-no for FAR too long before I learned who I am as an artist! Thank goodness that’s all a thing of the past!

Serving Forever 21 realness!

Do you make all your costumes yourself?

Yes! I almost exclusively sew everything I wear! I started off as a Forever 21 queen, but they just couldn’t keep up with me! After doing drag for about a year and a half, I finally decided that Forever 21 couldn’t handle my curvy, campy ass, and I introduced myself to the machine. After that, there was no turning back. It’s awesome to be able to picture a look in your head and not be limited by what you can find on the rack; I’m able to execute a look almost exactly how I envision it, and that’s been a really exciting transformation for me as an artist!

I’ve seen a few photos of you and 3 other queens on your Facebook, are these your Haus or friends or? You all look fab!

I guess you could call us a Haus of Misfits or something like that. We’ve also tossed around the name “Besties with Testies and Retta’s the Resties,” but really, in and out of drag, they’re my family. We actually met through Tumblr’s Drag Race (I seem to be plugging them a lot, eh?). Pierretta Viktori. Homely Pop. Hermaphroditie (or whatever she wants to be called at any given moment). Look them up. They’re all fabulously talented. We’re just a bunch of clowns doing clowny things and not caring WHAT people think about it. They inspire me to be better, but they also inspire me to stay true to who I am as an artist because you know what? I’m a one of a kind. As are all three of them. Gosh. I just love them so much. I’m so lucky to have them in my life Life is so much better when you and your posse put on a clown nose and set off into the world!

What’s your favourite number to perform and why? Can you describe it for us?

Without QUESTION, my favorite number to perform is “Big, Blonde, and Beautiful.” It’s my signature number, and I was so excited to have the opportunity to perform it during the Miss NotSafe4Werk.com Pageant I was honestly surprised and disappointed in the feedback I received for that performance. So many of my critiques were something along the lines of “we’ve seen the food thing before,” but, I mean, HELLO! What did you expect when you cast the self-identified FOOD QUEEN! Lacy ain’t going on no diet! I made a conscious effort to show versatility in many different facets of the competition, but I’m not willing to sacrifice “the food thing” because to me it’s not a “food thing.” It’s me. It’s Lacy Lane. I’m so unapologetic when it comes to close-mindedness here because it took me so long to get to where I am, but hey, you can’t please everyone! But to those who love what I do: come take a bite of Lacy Lane!

Which has been your favourite task in the Miss NotSafe4Werk 2015 Pageant?

This is such a hard question! I feel very confident and proud of all of the work I put into this competition, but if I had to pick one challenge in particular, I really loved Cosplay week. I haven’t done Cosplay too many times, but it’s one of the few exceptions to my food-in-every-look rule. I was so torn about which character to do that week. Ultimately, I chose Carl Fredricksen from the movie “Up,” but I was SO close to doing Mermaid Man from Spongebob. There are a couple other characters I would love to get around to doing, so be sure to keep an eye on what I do after this pageant!

What would it mean to you to be crowned Miss NotSafe4Werk 2015?

Ugh I can’t even TELL you how much it would mean to me to snatch the crown! I’ve been so close to an official title (of sorts) in the past, but I seem to be cursed with always being runner-up. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride, if you will (I’m single btw so this applies in many realms of my life). Winning this title would be the ultimate validation that staying true to yourself isn’t a hindrance. Confidence and an easily recognizable brand will take you far. I have huge aspirations for drag, and I’m just waiting for my moment, so why not let the Miss NotSafe4Werk.com 2015 Online Drag Pageant be my moment? I’ve worked my ASS off (except not really because Lacy is still thick), and I’m only hoping for the best! Competition was fierce, so may the best manly woman win! xoxoxo
