The third stop in Spencer’s Summer Concert Series sent Spencer to the Staples Center to see the long anticipated “Dressed to Kill Tour”. As you all know, the DTK Tour headlines the one and only Cher and if you are in L.A, opened by the amazing Cyndi Lauper. If you didn’t know any of this.. then you probably aren’t human and your information is currently being recorded and sent to the proper authorities. Let the Chernanigans commence!!! (Yes I just made up that word, you are welcome)

The 7th of July was a beautiful day in history… why? Because I got to see the two people who I feel set the bar on what true creativity in performance looks like. Cher and Cyndi Lauper have both mastered the art of performance as well as used their talents to make a huge difference in the world, making ideas such as equality feel like such a possible thing. Basically, Cher and Cyndi are perfect and the DTK Tour proved that to me and to everyone else that might have thought otherwise, well if they were there.
My friend Hannah and I got to the Staples Center pretty early. Of course, we are not the brightest of people so we went in the wrong direction of our seats… we did a full lap around Staples. By the time we finally got to our seats we had lost 20 minutes, but Hannah did gain a handful of Wetzel Pretzel’s Sinful Cinnamon! The staff took our tickets and told us that we were actually being upgraded to better seats. It’s not even my birthday! So we do another lap around Staples Center looking for customer service. Once we finally find it they upgrade us to the VIP suites! The divine power of Cher was guiding us through this night, it was incredible. We had pretty awesome seats. We were to the side of the stage but pretty close. Close enough to see the perfected detail of Cher’s face. Her is picture evidence of our excitement as we finally sat and began the wait!
Finally the moment I have personally been waiting for…. Cyndi Lauper. I love this women so much and to this moment.. I am not sure if I was looking forward more to seeing Cyndi or Cher. But anyways, Cyndi Lauper was the opener that night.. and she did NOT disappoint! The band started rocking and the guitar was going insane to the sound of “She Bop”! The queen was running through the audience in a boxing robe. At this point I am losing my breath and fainting. She KILLED it! Every song she did that night was perfect. She did serveral of my favorite Cyndi Lauper songs such as “All Through The Night”, “Money Changes Everything”, and “Witness”. She also did a song called “Into The Nightlife” that I have never heard before but it was amazing! Became an instant favorite for me!
I wasn’t the only that night that felt that Cyndi Lauper was on top of the world. Why our very own Senior Pop Culture Correspondent, Mr. Sidney Stokes was there and he had this too say to me after the concert!
The Staples Center had an energy like I’ve never felt. It was as if nostalgia met up with awe at the Temple of Pop, as Cyndi Lauper gave the opening benediction as the head of the faith brought down the rainbow colored heavens. Cyndi blew me away. I just can’t tell you guys how honored I feel that I got to see her perform in person. Gahhhh! I love her. Okay so after Cyndi finished, the wait seemed endless for Cher. I was afraid to sprint to the bathroom because I didn’t want to miss a single second of Cher’s opening. Finally the lights dimmed, and it was time! A video started playing on the stage, I couldn’t see it because the screens weren’t on yet and there was a pesky curtain in our vision. But then the music started and we heard Cher beginning the lyrics to “Women’s World”. Freaking out at this point but wait it got crazier, as the chorus began, the curtain drops and there she is! Cher is standing on this pedestal high above the audience, yelling the lyrics to Women’s World. It was amazing!!!
She performed “Strong Enough” next which was amazing of course and then she began to speak. I have always wanted to hear Cher speak in with my own ears. She began a sad conversation with us basically saying this was her final farewell tour… but then it got.
“This is my farewell *wink wink* farewell *wink wink* tour, and that is the honest to goodness truth, I am never coming back.. I swear to God… *walks away with her fingers crossed behind her back*. -Cher
The show then commenced! She pulled every single Cher trick in the Holy Bible of Cher. We saw a tribute to Sonny where she sang “Iv’e Got you Babe” to a monitor with Sonny’s image. We saw clips of her famous movies and she pulled out ye olde “Burlesque” costumes and even used the same choreo from the movie. Yes, she performed one of my favorite songs, “You Haven’t Seen the Last Of Me” and yes, it was perfect. No tears were shed *crosses fingers*.
She hit every single song you would hope to hear. We danced to “Take It Like A Man,” “Half-Breed,” “I Found Someone,” and of course “If I Could Turn Back Time.” It was amazing.
Cher finished the night with another one of my favorites… “Believe.” Hannah and I both agreed that we were not leaving the Staples Center until Cher performed this song. Let me tell you, it was totally worth it! She ended the night with a song I was never really a fan of. But the ways she did it was just so beautiful. Cher floated above the audience while singing “I Hope You Find It.” It was just beautiful.
All in all, it was the best concert I have ever been to and I have seen a lot of icons in my day. I had so much fun and I can’t wait for Cher to decide to do another farewell tour. Cher and Cyndi are incredible and I hope to stick around for a long while because I am not obsessing over them!
