“Dear Indie, Every girl has a secret that she takes to her grave, right? Xo Batty Royale”
Hey Gurl,
Thanks for the question! I’ve got a lot to say about the subject of SECRETS and before I dive in I’ll remind the rest of my lovely readers to hit me up on Twitter – or anonymously through my website – so I can continue giving you advice and keep this damn column going. Otherwise it’s back to Podcasting and recommending music!
Does every girl have a secret she takes to her grave? Absolutely. So does every boy, girl, man and woman – and in between…it’s part of being human! In fact, the older I get, the more I acquire so they’re going to need a doublewide coffin when it comes time to bury me. I don’t just keep my own though – I keep the secrets of everyone who confides in me as a lover, a friend, a family member – and especially as a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence. Yes, the work we drag nuns do is FUN and SPARKLEY but there is also a very serious side. Sisters, by nature, are mobile safe havens and our mere presence can cause people to confess things they wouldn’t typically tell someone. I consider it my sacred duty to guard the information I’m given.
In that respect, secrets can be healthy. But secrets can be unhealthy, too if they are causing shame, guilt or other bad feelings. Those are secrets that need to be exorcised, like demons. I don’t mean put it on a billboard (unless you have the cash and desire to do so), but it should taken off the heart in some way. I’m always here – and so are my many Sisters all over the world – but I say find a close friend you can trust or even a therapist, who is paid to keep secrets.
But there will always be some things we hold close and tell no one. And that can be kind of exciting, especially in this age of TELL EVERYONE EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME…just think: something that was never written in a diary…never posted on a Facebook wall…never Tweeted, texted or sent in an email. Something that is only yours, like a gift, given to no one except oblivion. There is something kind of beautiful and liberating about that…but I’m a dude in grease paint and a dress, so what the Hell do I know?
