Question: Condragulations on making the top five of So You Think You Can Drag Maci! Have you had a moment to reflect on what you have accomplished already yet?
Maci Sumcox: To be honest the whole experience has flown by at such a speed it took me a good four weeks just to get over the excitement of being cast at all. To have made it to the final means everything and it’s been made even more special getting there via the public vote, which I hope means that I have done something right over the past eight weeks.
Question: What do you think was your highlight and lowlight of the season so far?
MS: Well let’s start with the lowlight as I hate to focus on the negatives. For me it was going into the competition so new to the city with no fan base. I had not seen the show in person, only online and didn’t realize how much having a good group of fans can help. It has felt like a tough journey some weeks when you give everything and you end up near the bottom of the group. The highlight was my win in week six. I got to work with Holly Box-Springs and after bonding over the first five weeks it really felt like I had found a kindred spirit. Our work ethic is exactly the same “Work until we fall over”. Getting to the top two teams was amazing enough in itself but to end up winning the night overall really gave me the boost I needed.

Question: How would you describe your experience on SYTYCD? What was it like to work with Paige, Chelsea and all other guests that have come through?
MS: Doing SYTYCD really was like jumping off a cliff. I wasn’t sure exactly what I was getting myself into but I just jumped in and hoped that my particular talents would do well. Overall I think the show has given me the chance to build a fan base, hone my skills and all while genuinely having a blast. I have met so many wonderful people from the other contestants and guest performers like Sutton Lee Seymour who truly inspires me every time I get to see her perform, to Chelsea Piers who officially is our mentor but feels more like a big sister really, helping with our staging and always being there to remind you to breathe and enjoy it when you are freaking out about your loose shoes. Finally Paige Turner who as a performer we all know is amazing and hysterical to watch but for me she is now and will forever be the person responsible for giving me my shot. This show that she created is launching careers, giving up-and-coming queens the chance to shine in a fantastic venue with a great team behind them. I cannot thank her enough. Paige and the whole SYTYCD team has changed my life.
Question: So without spoiling anything, what can we expect from you in the finale?
MS: Well in my numbers for the finale I will be giving you two iconic characters in very different performances, one will be very character driven and funny, the other will hopefully be beautiful and a little emotionally stirring.

Question: Best of luck on the 13th Maci! Any you want to plug before we wrap up?
MS: Thank you very much it’s be fun to take a moment and reflect. It’s going to be strange suddenly having my Thursday evenings free but fear not you will be able to see me popping up all over town in guest spots but the biggest thing for me to plug is a fabulous Christmas show with myself and Holly Box-Springs called ‘All Wrapped Up’ which will be at Room 53 in HK on December 14th at 8pm. So keep looking at our social media or my website macisumcox.com for updates about the show including our special guest performers. Save that date!
