Hi Friends,
I’ve been aware of Annecy for a while…mostly as the teen that Sharon Needles took under her dark wing years ago (which I thought was so sweet and moving). She is certainly a drag superfan – so much so that she was even cast as Toto in a production of Peaches Christ’s warped retelling of the Wizard of Oz. But what most people don’t know is that Annecy is a talented singer/songwriter. When I heard her original song “Pull” (which gives me serious young Kate Bush girl-and-her-piano-quirkiness) I HAD to tell you all about it.
I invited Annecy into the Houdstooth Lodge for a chat, a place generally reserved for those over 21, but I make the rules so I can break them. Get to know her before she becomes so famous she won’t have the time or interest to be interviewed by drag nuns.
Q: What should we call you?
Annecy (or Queen Annecy but I’m hoping to shed the “queen” eventually)
Q: Who are some of your biggest artistic influences?
Oh lord…Amanda Palmer is my biggest influence as a musician and the reason I began teaching myself piano (and ukulele). She’s also a huge influence on my view of life and has really helped me grow as a person.
Judy Garland has been my idol since I was in my moms placenta. I want to be the reincarnation of her somehow.
Divine is one of my biggest inspirations and I’m not exactly sure why but I hope I can be the teenage girl version of her.
John Waters, David Lynch, Gregg Araki, Darren Stein, Peaches Christ and Cousin Wonderlette have made my love for filmmaking elevate enormously in the past couple years.
My pal Calpernia Addams has been one of my biggest inspirations in a million different ways that I can’t list.
Chris Crocker has been the reason I haven’t changed myself since I was 9 years old.
Sia somehow has become a huge influence on me as a songwriter as has Marina and the Diamonds and also Amanda Palmer.
I credit my desire to wanting to be a comedienne to Deven Green.
Jinkx Monsoon had a huge impact on me when I was in ninth grade and even though I’ve always loved theater and have been doing plays since I was 8, she made me fall in love with theatre more than I thought was possible.
Sharon Needles was a personal mentor to me for almost two years and helped me overcome a ton of struggles and made me a better person.
Katy Perry (don’t judge) has been my favorite singer since I was ten.
Pretty much every drag queen that has at least a little bit of a heart has impacted me in some way. Max Malanaphy makes me want to be a better person. Obviously I cannot list them all.
Q: Obviously I love music (um, hello). So tell me – what is your current favorite song?
Oh no………….uhh Lost by Katy Perry will always be my favorite song and has been since I first heard it 7 years ago.
Amanda Palmer’s song Bigger on the Inside pretty much saved my life when I was 15 and is probably tied as my favorite song with Lost.
Other than those the amount of favorite songs I have is infinite so I’ll just give you those.
Q: Let’s play: Finish the sentence. “When I’m Not Singing, I Like To…”
Do theater, make videos, eat, play piano/ukulele/play around with garage band if that counts, fangirl over drag queens, watch Netflix, study LGBT history (since I don’t get that much in school), chill with my pals in real life, eat, play with my puppy, eat, make collages, eat, play in Photoshop, eat, find something creative to do…
Q: OK let’s keep playing. “In 5 Years, I’ll be…”
A struggling artist living in a decorated cardboard box on the streets in New York living off of mac n cheese and hopefully a graduate of New York University or some other nice college.
Q: You’re super young…when did you write your first song?
It depends…I used to come up with weird songs when I was really little like (OH MY GOD I JUST REALIZED I WROTE A SONG ABOUT PUTTING BOYS IN DRAG WHEN I WAS IN KINDERGARTEN CALLED STYLISH, wow) but I really started writing down songs and piecing words together in fourth grade.
Q: What is PULL about (featured at the end of the article, by the way – so keep reading folks)?
Trichotillomania (which is a disorder that I deal with where I can’t stop pulling my hair out and it is the worst thing ever).
Q: What draws you to drag queens?
I don’t know. They’re like everything and unexplainable. I get asked that too often and I really don’t have an exact answer! But I do date my obsession back to when I discovered the Tom Rubnitz short film thingies Pickle Surprise and Strawberry Shortcut when I was 10.
Q: You were in Peaches Christ’s twisted version of the Wizard of Oz. What was it like working with her?
A dream…an exact parallel of Dorothy’s adventures in Oz. Something I’ll never forget and never be able to stop thanking her for.

…and now, without further adieu: the demo of “Pull” by Annecy.
