Talking Drag Race with Chiffon Dior: Episode Thirteen “The Finale”

Episode Thirteen “The Finale”

Well kids, all good things must come to an end……and so do thoroughly mediocre things too. When we look back and reflect on this season of Drag Race , we’ll all think…..well, at least we had Katya!

The show itself was pretty entertaining, adding in a final performance number by each queen for the first time.

All the of the performances were excellent with Violet’s standing out slightly above the rest. All of the gurls got to sit with RuPaul for a final interview and were treated to video messages from their friends and family. The video from Ginger’s father, with whom her relationship hasn’t always been the best, was particularly heart-wrenching. If I didn’t want to ruin my mascara, I might have shed a tear myself. Or several.

Ru brings all the gurls who didn’t make the top three onstage to give them a final moment in the Drag Race spotlight. Highlights included a recorded message for Jasmine Masters from her idol, the legendary Patti LaBelle, an ovation best suited for the winner of the season for Katya and Miss Fame bringing a chicken on stage. You read that right.

Business picks up as last season’s winner (and based on Twitter reactions, many fans pick to keep the crown this year.), Bianca Del Rio hit the stage, garbed all in silver glitter. No, seriously. Head to two silver glitter basically! She basically looked like the loser who got slimed on a uber-gay version of that old Nickelodeon game show.

So the time had come to pick a winner on the season and Ru couldn’t pass on the chance to kick the fans in the metaphorical balls yet again as she called out Katya. Alas, it was a bait and switch moment and after getting some water from Katya, proclaimed Violet Chachki the winner of the season.

I guess she had as valid a claim to the crown as any of the three and I hope she goes on to do great things with it. My criticism of this season shouldn’t be perceived as a knock against Violet or any of the other queens this year. I’m not sure what happened this season but things just felt off from the word go. Several years back, in an interview about his beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, a show with a rabid, passionate fan base also, creator Joss Whedon said, “Don’t give people what they want, give them what they need.”. In my opinion, that was the problem with this season, the fans of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” neither got what they wanted nor what they needed. Hopefully, the brain trust behind Drag Race can pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get to work on making season 8 the biggest and best season ever. It’s really what the incredibly loyal and passionate fans of this show, the ones who buy the merchandise, who sit through the Cucumber and Banana ads, who come out and see the shows, the ones who are the reason World of Wonder were able to pack out that convention center for DragCon, deserve. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for.

Thank you to everyone who read my column this season, to everyone who shared it on Facebook and Retweeted it on Twitter. Thank you to everyone who voted in our weekly polls. We have one final poll for you this season. Let us know how you would rate Season Seven of Drag Race. Until next season kids, remember to have your drag queens neutured or spayed.

Despite being a drag journalist for over five years, Chiffon only recently realized that she missed a golden opportunity back then to change her drag name to Rhoda Story.
