Welcome to #THEWEEKINDRAG, a recap on the past week in the world of drag!
IT’S FINALLY HERE. THE SEASON 8 CAST IS HERE! The internet exploded at the release of the the latest seasons cast, who’s lineup has proved absolutely flawless. Click here to watch the season trailer. My personal favourites so far are Kim Chi, Bob the Drag Queen and Derrick Barry, but I can’t wait to see what each and every one of them have in store.
This past week marked #LDF, otherwise known as London Drag Festival, hosted by West5! The three hour long event show cased a variety of UK and US talent, with hilarious hosts Meth and Mary Mac welcoming the UK’s cabaret king Joe Black, trio The Fabulettes and Virgin Xtravaganzah (with possibly the best rap act I’ve ever seen) to the stage. They were accompanied by US stars including the adorable Ongina (who also stood in to lipsync during a technical difficulty as well as being a storm trooper), the captivating Tammie Brown, Morgan McMichaels (who literally stage dived onto my head), JuJubee (my favourite lipsyncer ever), Gia Gunn and Laganja Estranja as #TeamTooMuch (SLAAAAAY) , the ever outfit changing Joslyn Fox, Kelly Mantle (with the best cover of “My Neck, My Back” I’ve ever heard), a surprise act from Mayhem Miller and an incredible acoustic set from Handsome Jeremy and Alaska Thunderfuck. The show was incredible, the acts ran seamlessly and the versatility and variety of the acts were highly entertaining! Congratulations to the West5, and here’s hoping to make it an annual event!
This week also marked the Super Bowl, with the one and only Lady Gaga singing the US National anthem. She sung beautifully and emotionally and wore a red sparkly pant suit which has already been subject to a billion internet memes, but also a replication but the incredible Sharon Needles. Producing this look only a day after the show, Sharon’s tribute has blown us all away!
The weekend also bought about the launch of MAX’s new show “MAX: Collective” at the Bryant Lake and Bowl Theatre in Minneapolis. The shows were a thank you to the fans who donated to Max’s recent KickStarter, in which he smashed the target goal and then some. The night was a collaboration of his own talents as were as fans and friends joining him to the stage. There was a live painter at the event, who created a huge mural of the events that unfolded that night, as well as fan art being displayed in frames on the piano. Dedicated fans of the “Collective” travelled across America to attend the two shows, some coming from as far as Australia! With nothing but good things to be heard about the show, a huge congratulations to Max!
Finally, this week was the 5th Anniversary of Paige Turner’s show “SLURP!”. The circus themed show packed the house at Therapy in New York City and they wow’d the crowd with a jam packed show featuring the Showbiz Spitfire Paige Turner herself, Chelsea Piers, Jackie Cox, Nomi SAS, Shnapphanna Von Carlsberg and the Spitfires, Drew and James! Congratulations on five years to Paige and her crew!
