The Week In Drag
We’re back! After “The Week In Drag” went on some what of a hiatus (ya girl graduated), it’s back and better than ever to fill you in on the world of drag in the past week. This week will be covering RuPaul’s Emmy, Bushwig 2016, Drag Race album drops, and much more!
We have to start this week off with congratulating Mamma Ru on winning an Emmy for “Outstanding Host of a Reality Program”. RuPaul has three decades of being in the entertainment business under her belt, so the award was well received and thoroughly earned. She dedicated her win to “the 100 queens of #DragRace and to outsiders everywhere”. Ru is quoted to say that she once said she’d rather have an enema than an Emmy. Lucky for her, she now can have both! Watch Ru’s emotional response to her win below:

Also last weekend, BUSHWIG 2016 took place in Brooklyn. The lineup was stuffed to the brim with talent from all over America, and overseas! Headlining the event was Latrice Royale, Lady Bunny, The Boulet Brothers, Thorgy Thor, April Carrion and Horrorchata. Other personal favourites of mine included Chicago’s own Imp Kid, the enchanting Patti Spliff, internet supreme Biblegirl, WERRRK’s Bio Queen contestant Crimson Kitty, and all the way from the my side of the pond here in the UK, Meth! The drag festival’s message of inclusion and no tolerance policy to any form of discrimination makes the queer festival stand out for all the right reasons. That combined with it’s stunning lineup, long live BUSHWIG!
Keeping to the festival theme, this week was also host to Australia’s Broken Heel drag festival! Held in the outback New South Wales city of Broken Heel, the festival brought drag queens and queer folk out into the dessert to celebrate the classic Aussie movie “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert“. The inclusive and welcoming vibe to the festival proved to have a large impact on locals and fans, who hope to see the festival return next year.
Back in New York City, another season of So You Think You Drag has hit the Big Apple. The competition is welcoming it’s incredible seventh season! The multi-week competition has a theme each week, in which ten of the brightest young stars on the NYC drag scene perform and take part in a runway to show off that week’s creations. NYC drag star Paige Turner who is a producer of the show and has hosted the competition for seven years, is excited for the themes of the new season and can’t wait to see what’s to come. For more information, watch WERRRK’s own Strawberry Fields chat with Paige previewing this season!

Last but not least, this week has blessed us with new music from two current All Stars! Alaska Thunderfuck not only managed to win this week’s All Stars challenge and bring back fan favourite Lil’ Poundcake, but also dropped a new single “Puppet“, complete with music video AND a new album release date! Poundcake is available for pre-order here. After Alaska’s debut album “ANUS” was incredibly successful, new music from the trash to treasure queen was welcomed with open arms. The new single “Puppet” is a catchy, upbeat dance record, with big “fuck you” vibes with lyrics such as “bitches can suck it, I’m not your puppet”. Fellow AS2 season sister Phi Phi O’Hara also spoilt us with lots of new music! The brains behind the cosplay queen O’Hara Jaremi Carey dropped a new music video for single “Play” as well as a preorder for the new album “Fever Heart“. The album’s lead single “Play” has chill vibes and fans have quoted the single as “a song to have sex to”. Make sure you pre-order both of the girls albums!
One final note for all you queens out there, there is time to enter the 2016 Miss WERRRK.com online drag pageant. Click here for more information about how to apply for the biggest and best online drag pageant in the world!
