When World of Wonder announced their new series, Drag Tots. Paige Lauren quickly volunteered to cover the exploits of these baby queens voiced by some of RuPaul’s Drag Race’s biggest stars ever in our newest recurring feature, WOW Quickies!
Episode 1: Reading
The Tots are given the assignment of reading this week, and Roxy Moron (voiced by RPDR season 6 top 3 queen, and All Stars 2 contestant, Adore Delano) has stocked up on every book she can find, from “Gone with the Weave” to “Moby Tuck”
The other girls, Dina Saur (voiced by RPDR season 6 winner Bianca del Rio), Lady Liber T (voiced by fan favorite of RPDR season 4 and All Stars 1, Latrice Royale) and Arugula (voiced by RPDR season 9 “Miss Congeniality” Valentina) and mentor Corny the Unicorn (voiced by none other than RuPaul herself) explain the definition and herstory of what “reading” means to a queen. It’s not about the books, but a specific way queens communicate with, and tease each other – a rich tradition in drag culture.
Dina offers an example by reading Lady Liber T, before allowing Roxy to try it for herself. Corny reminds us all that a good read is smart, shady and above all, funny. Roxy slides on a pair of cat-eye glasses and goes to town on the other Tots, reading them all – including Corny – for FILTH, henny. (House down boots.)
This episode is cute and fun, and of course they add a shameless plug for good measure. (Diva Rules by Michelle Visage – available wherever books are sold!) More importantly, it offers those who may be new to the world of drag insight on why queens read, and reminds them that it’s all in good fun. Because reading is what? FUNDAMENTAL!
Written by John Polly, Drag Tots is an entertaining web series you’ll want to keep up with! Read on for the re-cap of the second episode, now available on WOW Presents Plus.
Episode 2: Locker 69
Roxy, Arugula, Dina and Lady Liber T are back this week (still no sign of Donatella Mewhattodoo as voiced by RPDR season 5 and AS2 queen Detox, but she is credited, so hopefully any episode now!) In an homage to popular Netflix series Stranger Things, the Tots find themselves trapped in a strange black hole a la The Upside Down.
It all starts when Roxy Moron (Adore Delano) mentions she’s been binge watching Stranger Things, the others pipe in that they have too, and Roxy wonders if a place such as The Upside Down really exists.
Lady Liber T (Latrice Royale) speculates that there’s a portal to another realm “right here in the school,” enter Corny the Unicorn (RuPaul) to give the Tots explicit instructions to STAY AWAY from Locker 69 – of course, if there’s anything no queen can resist it’s something she can’t have, and Arugula (Valentina) is the first to jump in heels first.
The other Tots quickly follow, finding themselves in the Between-Me-Down-There, and faced with a dark version of Corny, The Shady Monster. Mildly afraid, and majorly bummed out by their surroundings, the Tots try to figure a way out. First they try spreading glitter, with their apparent glitter powers, but to no avail. Finally, Dina Saur (Bianca del Rio) points out that nothing in the world can beat the power of good lighting! The queens bust out their lighting devices and The Shady Monster is appeased. Feeling glam, she tells the Tots how to get back where they came from.
The girls get back to school in time to hear that classes are over and head on home.
The episode is filled with nods to RuPaul’s Drag Race, featuring more than a couple popular catchphrases, and is just as much fun as the episode before. This week’s lesson is that good lighting is EVERYTHING! So remember, kids, unless otherwise instructed, make sure you have those flashes ON when meeting a favorite queen, and don’t be shy about finding your light!
