Hello my friends! It’s officially Emmy season which means it’s time to chat about all of our favorite shows from this passing year. As you all know, one of my favorite things about television is of course the costume design. From the crimson red gowns of The Handmaid’s Tale, to the empowered street-style looks of Broad City, costume designers have been charged with breathing life into the characters we all know and love.

In celebration of this years achievements in costume design, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising has opened the 12th annual outstanding “Art of Television Costume Design” exhibition. The exhibition salutes the work of this year’s Emmy®-nominated Costume Designers, Costume Supervisors and Assistant Costume Designers. Highlighted with costumes from 2 of this years Emmy-winning television shows. The exhibition includes over 100 costumes from a total of 24 shows. There are so many awesome shows represented within this exhibit, many of which we talk about a lot, here at WERRRK.com!

Bring yourselves back online. For all of my “Westwords with Spencer” fans, there is a segment of the exhibition dedicated to our beloved Westworld! The podium displays a majority of the costumes from Shogun World, a new setting we visited in season 2. My favorite costume of course belonged to Thandie Newton’s character, Maeve Millay. The costumes are absolutely stunning in person. and the costumes are paired well with a television screen, hosting commentary by costume designer, Sharen Davis.

The night is dark and full of terrors. The museum is currently hosting THE costumes from Game of Thrones! I literally started to cry when I stepped up to see the beautiful work by costume designer, Michele Clapton. Since I visited the museum, Michele Clapton actually won an Emmy award for these exact costumes! I was quickly pulled into the beautiful black gown that Cersei Lannister sports in the later seasons of Game of Thrones. Then we have the notorious white fur coat Daenerys Targaryen wears when she flies her dragon across the wall to save Jon Snow. These costumes are incredible and you should go see them immediately. You do need to hurry however, as the Game of Thrones costumes are actually leaving earlier. You have until Saturday, September 22nd to see the costumes from Game of Thrones. What I am trying to say is, go now!

Another show I am absolutely obsessed with is A Series of Unfortunate Events. Being someone who read these books as kid, I was ecstatic when I found out they were creating a Netflix version. Cynthia Summers has done an amazing job and is she is really giving so much life to these outrageous characters we met in the books. My favorite costume has to be Esmé Squalor’s ensemble. I love the cone shape of the bodice and the drape in the back of the dress. Did I mention the giraffe on her shoulder with the twin doll heads?

Celebrating television costume creation, this free to the public exhibition will be held in the FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Downtown Los Angeles. It will be open starting Tuesday, August 21, 2018 and close Saturday, October 6, 2018.  Museum hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Don’t forget to tag your pictures with #WERRRKdotcom so we can see all of your beautiful photos!

Have so much fun, and I’ll see you at the Emmys!

Spencer is a Designer, Event Planner, and Television Nerd in Los Angeles; not to be confused with his look-alike... Chris Pratt. When Spencer isn't talking about fashion, he spends most of his free time eating burgers, hoarding Funko Pop-Vinyls, and talking your ear off about Game of Thrones.
