We are back! Oh wow, can you believe we are in the ninth season of this show! On top of that, this is my fifth season hosting “What the Walking Dead“! Oh dear, I feel old. When I first started this column, Judith was still a tadpole! Anyways, The Walking Dead is back in action and I am so stoked. I have no idea where this season is heading so I really don’t know what to expect. Let’s check in with our rather large group of survivors in the new episode titled, “A New Beginning”. Like Chris Cuomo would say, “Let’s get after it”. If you need a quick refresher of where we left off, check out the season eight finale recap.
The Capitol Building
This capitol building scene was a perfect way to start the season. It felt like old times really and that is why I enjoyed it. We had the whole gang back together doing what they do best, killing zombies. We were going back to our roots so to say. First we have Rick and Michonne riding around on horses slaying the walkers like they were round-table knights. Then we got to watch the team assemble, and infiltrate the capitol. I will say, the walker with the spiders coming out of its mouth made my soul jump out of my body for about five seconds. I was not ready for that. Then we have the stress of dragging a pretty big wagon over a pretty weak glass floor. First of all, who was the interior designer who mad that floor transparent. It’s a capitol building, not an aquarium. Speaking of aquariums, Ezekiel fell through that glass and was dangling like a chummy piñata. This is the quality content I am here for! Sick!
New Title Sequence
I love the new title sequence. It is very artistic, yet has a lot of pretty creepy themes in it. I don’t really know why they changed it, as I didn’t find anything wrong with the old sequence. Perhaps with the show going through so much actual change, perhaps they just wanted to give a complete face-lift. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Highway to Hell
Apparently, it’s been a pretty stormy season since we left off. All of the bridges seem to be coming a part and their have been quite a few herds of walkers found about the area. The caravan taken from the capitol building is moving along the road but they get stuck in some mud of course. I am sure you can predict what happens next. Yup, you guessed it! Walkers are everywhere. Luckily we basically have the Avengers of The Walking Dead world here so the crew pretty swiftly executes the herd. But of course there is one new guy and he see’s a horse in trouble. He goes to rescue the horse and gets himself bit. Welp my good sir, I saw that coming from a mile away. All i can say is this, if you managed to escape the large zombie herd and all you have lost at this point is a horse, you are in good shape! Do not go back for your horse, unless of course it is a Trojan horse full of food then yes go back and grab it. Sorry dude who’s name I don’t know, it sucks to suck.
Carol and Ezekiel, Sitting in a Tree
Oh okay, sure Carol… Kiss whoever you want I guess. No! I specifically said that I need to see Carol and Daryl together before I even consider letting the producers end this show. It must happen! Carol and Ezekiel are not that cute together! Carol and Daryl on the other hand… I dig it! She even called him “Pookie” again, oh my heart! Stop teasing me you bastards! Carol and Daryl already have a cool, easy ship name… It’s just Caryl. Try putting together Carol and Ezekiel. It just doesn’t work that way. Carekiel? Ezekiol? I do not approve. I’m just saying, Carol deserves to be happy with Daryl, and I hope this relationship with Ezekiel will convince her of that. I would like to end this segment by stating that Carol deserves better than a wedding proposal on some horses!
It’s Maggie Time
Her name is Maggie, and she is not playing any games! Wow, this was a good episode for Maggie and I have a feeling this is going to be a big season for her! My favorite part was when Gregory lured Maggie into a trap so that she can get jumped by the dad of that random kind who died in the above paragraph. Of course, Maggie kicked his ass and then went and kicked Gregory’s ass. Name a time and a place, and Maggie will be there to kick your damn ass! She then takes it to another level and has Gregory hung by his neck. Damn girl! I got to say, that was probably the second time I have actually enjoyed watching someone get hung. The other time was during Game of Thrones but we don’t need to get into that right now, do we? Maggie is quickly morphing into a serious leader. Maggie’s people come before the needs of other communities and that is a hard concept for Rick to understand. Because of that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Maggie ends up becoming the new leader once Rick disappears this season. (Oh yeah If you didn’t know, it was announced that this will be Rick’s last season. Yes I know, it’s bullshit.) Maggie has gone through a lot in this show, so I am confident she will become the leader our characters need.
In Summation
Once a king, Ezekiel is now serving Georgia as the kingdom piñata! That walker with a mouth full of spiders was all kinds of nope. I feel like they should change the theme song to “Rain is a Good Thing” by Luke Bryan as the lyrics fit in perfectly! “Rain makes corn, corn makes whiskey. Whiskey makes my baby, feel a little frisky”. Is it me or do I feel like the Saviors are looking a little like they are in the need of saving? If that kid was singing at my funeral, I would rise from the dead and fight him. The Rick and Michonne scenes are so sweet. At least we got one romance right… Carol please take notes. If it were me, I would have burnt Gregory at the stake as it would have been more fun and warm. Everyone was looking a tad chilly!
Before we end this recap, I just wanted to bring attention to the recent tragic news. Unfortunately on Saturday, a Walking Dead icon has passed away. The incredible Scott Wilson, known for playing Hershel Greene, has died at the age of 76. Scott was an incredible man who was responsible for bringing us so much joy and laughter throughout the years. On behalf of everyone here at WERRRK.com, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Scott’s family and friends. We will sure miss him!
“You step outside, you risk your life. You take a drink of water, you risk your life. And nowadays you breathe, and you risk your life. Every moment now you don’t have a choice. The only thing you can choose is what you’re risking it for. ” – Scott Wilson as Hershel Greene (Isolation – Season 4, Episode 3)
That is all for this week! Join me next week for the another recap of The Walking Dead. By the looks of the trailer, we seem to be in store for a real treat! Sunday cannot come soon enough! Stay safe everyone and enjoy your week. Look both ways before you cross the street!
