Our next headliner is a drag superstar coming to us from Los Angeles, California and we are super excited to announce that Ursula Major will be headlining the Austin International Drag Festival this year! (Get your tickets here and join us in Austin this fall!)
We were able to get a few words with Ursula before she headed overseas for a tour about being part of this year’s Austin International Drag Festival!
Congratulations on being named a headliner Ursula! How did you get involved with the Austin International Drag Festival and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Austin International Drag Festival was an entity that I had only heard about up until last year. I then had the opportunity to attend and perform at the festival for the first time after meeting Jamie, the president, at an event in Los Angeles several months before AIDF 2018. I told him what little I really knew about the event, and when he spoke so passionately about what the true mission and message of the festival, I immediately knew I wanted to be a part of it. Even just hours into the festival last year, I KNEW that it would be something I would be attending come hell or high water every time I possibly could. The opportunity to headline AIDF 2019 is an absolute honor. Having click-clacked around many different drag adjacent festivals and conventions, I could easily say this was the most performance and performer inclusive, body positive, community driven, and truly queer event that I’ve had the fortune of being involved with. I hope to see some familiar faces this coming year, and look forward to meeting so many new ones, some of whom will undoubtedly become part of my AIDF family.
For those people living under a rock, can you tell us a little bit about Ursula Major and your drag?
Ursula Major is a genderfuck performance artist and personality that will captivate you with her bodacious curves from one side, and her beard and bulge from the other. This constantly evolving mishmash of tattoos, fur, corsets, wigs, makeup, sweat, and rearranged body mass will make you wonder why you are struggling to hide a fear boner. For best results, surrender yourself to the illusion of her femmasculinity.
Ursula is a Tucson, AZ native that found performance while living in Seattle, polished up over several years in Los Angeles, and very recently relocated to Salt Lake City. She has graced the stage in many places around the country, and has already been on a series of self funded and haphazard tours around the US. These include cities such as: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, San Diego, Denver, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Miami – just to name a few! In addition to performing around the US, she has performed in Mexico City, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver B.C., and a month long residency in London with the world famous Cirque le Soir. Beginning in April 2019, she will be embarking on her first European tour with 12+ dates in Germany and all over the UK – keep your eyes peeled!
We can’t wait to see what you’re planning on bringing to the stage in Austin! Can you give the WERRRK .com universe a little tease of what’s to come this fall in Texas?
Well, that’s a tricky question. I know I have some bloody shoes to fill from last years finale, but I pride myself on being able to dabble in variety of performance styles and genres – some less “typical” of a drag artist than others. It’s difficult to say what exactly I might be bringing to the stage his coming year, but I CAN tell you may never know if you’re not there to see it for yourself!
