Ah! Welcome back everyone for another edition of “A Haute Second with Spencer“. It is the first Monday in May so you know what that means, the Met Gala! This year’s theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. To clarify, Andrew Yang the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute explained the theme as a “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration . . . style at the expense of content . . . the triumph of the epicene style “. Oh, this is going to be good
To preface, this list includes about fourteen of my favorite looks that not only were high fashion, but ALSO encompassed the theme within the presentation. So basically if it wasn’t camp, it’s not on my list. Being founded by drag queens, WERRRK.com knows a little something about camp. So let’s see how the celebrities did! Let’s get started.
Jared Leto
Jared Leto carried his head around the pink carpet before handing it over to Shawn Mendes. That is not something I get to write everyday. I love this look and the “Camp” element is wonderful! I am hoping he just does this look from now on for every carpet going forward
Natasha Lyonne
Natasha Lyonne looks like a Campy super villain combined with a Back to the Future portrayal of what a modern politician would look like. I love this look and it is always a treat to see Natasha on a carpet setting.
Tessa Thompson
Tessa Thompson turned her hair into a whip. A whip! Now she holds all of the power, and I am in her service. This is a great look. I do not love the dress, but overall this was a campy success.
Ezra Miller
I don’t even know what the words are for this look. Ezra Miller just looks incredible. I honestly did not even know this was real at first and had to get multiple shots of his face before I could do anything else. Everything about this look is perfect and camp. Take notes everyone.
Lizzo
Lizzo is 100% that bitch! I love this look so hard. It is very extra, lots of different textiles all in combination with that hair and hairpiece. This is for sure camp. Lizzo looked amazing but then again, when does she not.
Lupita Nyong’o
My soul has left my body. I love this f***ing look on Lupita Nyong’o so much! Everything about this is Camp to me. There is just so much going on but it is pulled together so well. Lupita can make anything look good. This was for sure one of my favorite looks of the night.
Cardi B
Well! Okay, I do not love this look. Nor do I dislike it. It’s just alright. Cardi B looks great and there is just so much detail in this gown. I would say it also certainly has a Campy tone, so I had to include it. I just can’t stop thinking about how it looks like a really expensive oven mitt but moving on.
Cara Delevingne
I look forward to seeing Cara Delevingne every year and she never disappoints. This year was no different! The headpiece is screaming camp and I love the rainbow mesh pieces. Honestly, it’s just kind of random and that is why it is so perfect.
Janelle Monáe
I’m not sure anyone else captivated the essence of Camp better than Janelle Monae. This look is everything. It is so fun, yet so stunning on her. Even the eyelash had a mechanical movement as she walked down the carpet. This was perfect camp. Period.
Kacey Musgraves
Can I get a Yeehaw!? While on one hand I would say this feels a little obvious for Kacey Musgraves, especially wearing Moschino. However, she looks freaking amazing and campy so what is there to complain about! I love this look. She had a fully realized camp character and even pulled up to the carpet in a hot pink convertible car. I love it!
Katy Perry
Katy! The theme was “Camp” not “Lamp”! Totally kidding, this lamp camp look was totally camp. I loved it. Katy Perry has always had a campy sense of style so this theme was perfect for her. She probably had this in her closet already so Katy just had to show up.
Celine Dion
She hath risen! The Goddess of Light, Celine Dion. I love this look so hard. Celine is giving me Cate Blanchett in Thor Ragnarok realness but like, the nice version. This look is perfect. Celine is always a Met Gala stand out.
Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox knew exactly what she was doing when she hit that carpet and it shows. I loved this look as it gave me a mixture of camp with a little ode to drag ballroom culture. Get it queen!
Billy Porter
Billy Porter doesn’t just wear fashion… he is fashion! I mean look at this. Every single camera was on him in this moment. He demanded the attention of the entire world with this look and I loved it. Perfection!
Lady Gaga
Okay I have done a lot of thinking on this one. Usually, Lady Gaga is my favorite pick for any carpet. But this time, I hate to admit it wasn’t my favorite. At first I didn’t like it at all but now that I have slept on it I do kind of like it. The look and the performance was camp. She did wear four different looks so that is major points, especially over the men who just wore black suits. However it was just a little basic compared to what I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong, Gaga is the greatest human to ever walk this universe. I just felt that this look was a little pedestrian which is really due to Gaga always setting the bar soooo high when it comes to her campy looks.
Florence Welch
This is more of an honorable mention only because I love this look- it just isn’t camp to me. If this was a regular red carpet, Florence Welch would be one of my picks for Best Dressed she is just that good. It just didn’t read camp to me. Aside from the theme, Florence literally looks like a perfect angel so…
Wow that was amazing. Now there were tons of celebrities on the pink carpet, but only a handful were following the theme unfortunately. Those celebrities were mostly highlighted in what I just showed you. Don’t believe me, well I asked one of our favorite experts on how they felt the celebrities did. Mariah Balenciaga from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 had this to say when I asked her for a comment.
“Girl, It was Camp…… For some ! #Shade” -Mariah Balenciaga
Thank you all for reading and let me know who your favorites were! Mine are definitely Lupita and Janelle for sure! Alright friends, enjoy the rest of your week! The night is dark and full of fashion
