Drag Race fans around the world are in for a treat! A new World of Wonder docu-series Werq the World, which follows the ensemble tour of the same name, is an unprecedented behind the scenes look at the lives of some of your favorite queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The tour, and series, will feature Alyssa Edwards, Shangela, Valentina, Latrice Royale, Sharon Needles, Kim Chi, Detox, Violet Chachki, Aquaria, and Kennedy Davenport. Each episode is centralized around one queen and gives you an inside look like you’ve never seen. This sneak peek into the lives and relationships of these fan favorites is not to be missed!
Each episode follows a standard documentary feel with a good balance of interview and observation, but unlike Drag Race, there is no staging or competition to influence what is said or done. It’s all very raw and very real.
“It caters to [Drag Race] fans because they’ll all get their unique episode for a queen who they know and love, but it also shows a completely different side of drag, outside of the reality sphere. Some fans might be like ‘where’s all the drama’ but they will get that too.”–Jasper Rischen
A show like this gives fans a new way of connecting to their favorite queens and getting to know a different side to queens they may not have cared for or been drawn to before. Director Jasper Rischen hopes the opportunity to see the queens outside of the lights and stage, as real people who work incredibly hard to provide the entertainment we all love, will influence some fans to be nicer, less critical.
“They are truly busting their asses for you, for the fans, so maybe next time you’re typing up a mean comment, you’ll think twice.”–Jasper Rischen
I’ve written before about the subject of drag queens being people first, so I won’t harp on this subject, but I do want to encourage everyone who considers themselves a fan of drag – and especially of Drag Race – to watch this series!
The first episode follows Season 10 winner, Aquaria, and debuting on World of Wonder’s streaming service WOW Presents Plus on Thursday, June 6th.
