WERRRK.com has proudly partnered up with the Austin International Drag Festival this year and we have been given the privilege of announcing this year’s headliners first! We are so excited about being a part of this amazing event this year and we cannot wait to bring you all the fabulous drag artists that are going to be headlining this year!
Our next headliner is a very familiar face to the WERRRK.com universe as she was the first runner up in our 2017 Miss Bio-WERRRK pageant and has since gone on to even bigger and better things! We are very excited to announce that Geneva Convention will be headlining the Austin International Drag Festival this year! (Get your tickets here and join us in Austin this fall!)
Congratulations on being named a headliner Geneva! How did you get involved with the Austin International Drag Festival and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Thank you so much! I’m absolutely ecstatic to have been selected as a headliner this year. AIDF is very close to my heart and I credit the festival for being instrumental in developing my career as I know it. I applied for the first time in 2017 and was absolutely floored when I was accepted. I’d only recently started entertaining as Geneva, though I had been fronting a band in drag for a few years already.
I thankfully knew a couple of people who were going to the festival but none of them were close friends yet, so I was honestly slightly nervous about going by myself. My nervousness quickly vanished, though. The selected artists and staff were extraordinarily kind and welcoming to me. I made friends immediately and I’ve never experienced such a sense of community anywhere else in the Fringe arts entertainment industry. This festival is full of people who love all types of drag, no matter your gender, background, performance styles, or experience level. I truly felt like I was part of a family when I left that year and I couldn’t wait to go back. This year is going to be bigger and better than ever and I’m so grateful to be a part of this experience.
For those people living under a rock, can you tell us a little bit about you and your drag?
I’m definitely a wild card when it comes to my interests in performance. I’m from a small town in the east Tennessee hills and I grew up as a little queer person in the 80’s and 90’s, so I clung to any kind of outside culture that I could get. I was obsessed with the music, movies, and television of that era, and it heavily influenced the types of acts I like to perform. I specialize in bizarre, often pop culture influenced numbers with a dash of glam and comedy. There’s nothing that I love more than looking stunning onstage while acting like a total weirdo. I don’t have many boundaries at all, and there’s nothing that I’m afraid to try in a number. I also a professional musician in my day job, so sometimes you’ll get some live vocals or instruments in the mix!
We can’t wait to see what you’re planning on bringing to the stage in Austin! Can you give the WERRRK.com universe a little tease of what’s to come this fall in Texas?
I don’t want to give too much away, but be prepared for some brand new, never before seen shenanigans and maybe an certain Old Friend. Can’t wait to see you all in November!
