Congratulations on being named a headliner Hugo! How did you get involved with the Austin International Drag Festival and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Thank you so much! I was approached by a mysterious organiser on the internet and was sure it was a joke, but I’m very glad it’s not! I’ve never performed as Hugo outside of New Zealand, so to make my international debut on the other side of the planet feels very awesome and overwhelming. I can’t wait to have my eyes opened, my heart warmed and my loins wetted by all the awesome drag I’m about to be a part of.
For those people living under a rock, can you tell us a little bit about Hugo and your drag?
I got into drag about four years ago after one hell of a gender identity crisis and have since come out as a trans-man. My drag is silly, joyful, sparkly and camp as fuck. It’s also now my full-time job – I run a queer events management company and work as a producer and MC, running over a hundred cabaret shows a year (which is quite the achievement in the tiny country I’m based in!) Y’all also might know me ‘cause I was the first drag king (and trans man) to be on a drag reality show. NZ had it’s own Drag Race called House of Drag which aired last year. Spoiler alert: I won!
We can’t wait to see what you’re planning on bringing to the stage in Austin! Can you give the WERRRK .com universe a little tease of what’s to come this fall in Texas?
I’m gunna try and bring a huge variety of acts! Funny, creepy, sexy, cute. My biggest goals are to have fun and learn heaps. I’m such a small town dragster so I can’t wait to watch heaps of shows, meets lots of cute gays and be thoroughly inspired and awed. Make sure to give me a big hug if you see me!
