WERRRK.com has proudly partnered up with the Austin International Drag Festival this year and we have been given the privilege of announcing this year’s headliners first! We are so excited about being a part of this amazing event this year and we cannot wait to bring you all the fabulous drag artists that are going to be headlining this year!
We are very excited to announce that Philadelphia’s own Rasta Boi Punany will be headlining the Austin International Drag Festival this year! (Get your tickets here and join us in Austin this fall!)
Congratulations on being named a headliner! How did you get involved with the Austin International Drag Festival and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Ran 2016, I believe, I looked on Facebook and saw the Austin International Drag Festival posted. I inboxed (Festival head) Jamie Steward Bancroft regarding performing for the festival and was advised to complete the application. My interest was to join this festival, meet other positive, like-minded individuals and showcase my talents as an African descent King. I was chosen and have been grateful ever since. To be a Headliner means the world to me!!! To be recognized by the Drag Festival as a result of the hard work put into promoting the visibility of a POC King, I am truly honored and blessed for this opportunity.
For those people living under a rock, can you tell us a little bit about you and your drag?
My first appearance as Rasta Boi Punany, Drag King came after I had no idea what a Drag King was. My wife introduced me to the world of drag, we then, in turn introduced Philadelphia to Rasta Boi Punany with her guidance and my passion and the rest is history. My first appearance at a competition rendered my first title and the first King of color to win Mr. Philadelphia Drag King and Mr. Philly Pride (2011). 10 titles later, traveling the country and becoming an international King performing outside of the United States, my mission is make visible Kings of color and to continue to meet positive auras.
We can’t wait to see what you are planning on bringing to the stage in Austin! Can you give the us a little tease of what’s to come this fall in Texas?
A little tease will be taking a journey down a road filled with smooth, sexual lyrics and a tease of what Rasta Boi Punany packs in his ‘hidden’ treasure.
