Congratulations on being named a headliner! How did you get involved with the Austin International Drag Festival and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Thank you thank you! I am so souped to be a headliner for the second year in a row! I caught wind of the AIDF way back as they were gearing up for the first year! Some messages were exchanged with friends about how it was going to be a great opportunity to both network and have a great time with likeminded people, so I signed up to be a performer. Despite being so scared to be so far from home, the first, and subsequent, years of attending remain to be some of the greatest times of my drag career! It’s a real joy to be able to show and witness art and creativity in such a purely excited and happy moment. I haven’t missed a year, and have been blessed that a lot of the previous fests have coincided with my birthday, so it’s like the best present ever.
For those people living under a rock, can you tell us a little bit about you and your drag?
Hailing from Providence RI, my drag is quite a lot of spooky, a little bit uncomfortable, and often ironically funny. I like to mix pop music with hard rock and spit slime and transform into a witch and make prolonged eye contact with audience members, all with a smile (or a very big snarl). I’d like to think I’m the nicest demonically possessed android you’d ever get to meet, and I like to have a good time and make sure everyone is too. I’ve been getting in makeup and going out since 2009, and I’ve been performing since around 2011. But we’re still goin’ strong, baby. Starting out was a little rocky; there weren’t many active alternative performers visible on the scene in Providence when I first started, so I ended up hitting a lot more Boston open stages; but the ball got rolling and I’m so proud of my city for offering not only the high glam, but the spooky, the low brow, the kings and gender nonconformists that everyone deserves. I’m a (g)hostess at EGO Providence every week and a member of Boston’s Slaughterhouse Society, and I spread my roots quite far across New England.
We can’t wait to see what you are planning on bringing to the stage in Austin! Can you give the us a little tease of what’s to come this fall in Texas?
I think I’m going to resurrect some classic ideas of demonic infestation, and I might bring some live singing numbers about journeying into space. I’ll probably stare blankly into the crowd for at least 45 seconds, and I definitely know I’m wearing a lot of black. Hugs and Bites, xoxo
