RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has now hit halfway through the competition already …where does the time go? After last week’s emotional departure we say farewell to Vinegar Strokes and that car boot outfit.
It’s the episode most drag fans love to watch…..Snatch Game! After over ten seasons and four rounds of All Stars, Snatch Game has become a predominant factor for the front runners for the competition. During the character walkthroughs, Ru was accompanied by judge Alan Carr, to give us a little 101 on who the queens would be portraying. Each queen seemed fairly confident compared to season’s past. After so many seasons, everyone pretty much knows the routine by now.
It wouldn’t be snatch game without the double character drama showdown. Both Divina De Campo and Baga Chipz planned to do British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Divina, who had three back up characters, scolded Baga for having no one else but being the good sport, she backed away from Maggie and even gave Baga the better outfit to define the character.
Each season has brought out the best and worst in the snatch games history, over the last week WOW presents have been showcasing the most popular fan choices with Bianca Del Rio‘s ‘Judge Judy’, Adore Delano’s ‘Anna Nicole Smith’ Alaska ThunderFuck’s ‘Mae West’ and Jinkx Monsoon’s ‘Little Edie’ to name a few. Of course the main rule is ‘Make it funny and make us laugh.’ Even if the character isn’t well known (i.e. Little Edie), if its funny, it’s memorable. This season will be different for overseas fans who might have absolutely no idea who the queens are playing this season. Which as a UK fan is refreshing, as in past seasons, I’ve not known many of the selected characters. Without further ado bring on the Snatch Game…..
Guests on this season’s Snatch game were the winner of Strictly Come Dancing, Stacey Dooley, a fave of mine from the show with a great sense of humour and the mother of morning talk shows, Lorraine Kelly.
While each queen was pretty much instantly recognisable, the stand out was clearly The Vivienne as Donald Trump, who without doubt was so creepily accurate it had RuPaul a bit shook! Baga was a demon-esque Maggie Thatcher who bounced back and forth with ‘Donald Trump’ fantastically! Poor Sumting made me laugh for the wrong reasons, her David Attenborough was cute but made him look like a bizarre Halloween character. Alongside Crystal ,who was also a bit of a dud, I myself was confused by Blu’s Mary Berry the nation’s baking grandmother. Mary is of course most famous due to the TV show The Great British Bake Off, which is laden with cheeky innuendos without her really knowing it. Overall the first Snatch Game ran smoothly with The Vivienne and Baga the clear front runners to snatch the RuPeter Badge!
Mirror moment was so heartwarming, talking about the importance of marriage equality. With Divina married for seven years, and both Crystal and Cheryl recently engaged, Blu explained how Northern Ireland is still against same sex marriage. As a viewer, the beauty was knowing that this week saw the bill of gay marriage made legal. Twitter flooded tweets to Blu, with her declaring she can now get married in all caps euphoria, we love a happy ending!
This week’s guest judge is none other than the queen of girlbands, iconic dresses and a wild personality, Miss Geri Halliwell. We also have Alan Carr back on the panel which makes me so happy, as much as I like Graham Norton, he doesn’t give as much humour whilst on the panel.
Runway theme is Weird Science: Genetically Modified Drag Queens….yes really! There were a lot of standout outfits this week and as the numbers dwindle, it’s going to be difficult to predict who is going to emerge as the winner. For me the top outfits were Blu, whose makeup was so incredible, it took me a while to realise that it was eye makeup and not some weird foam head, Divina and, of course, Crystal with her absolutely spectacular runway! It’s something we’ve never seen on the show which helped to accentuate the various talents we’ve seen this season.
The Vivienne’s Donald Trump was declared by Michelle Visage as the best character we may have ever had on Snatch Game. Considering how many we’ve seen, it’s the highest form of a compliment. We see a double win for Baga and The Vivienne for their double duo of evil political characters.
Special mention to Cheryl for finally making it to Untucked safe and not landing her fourth week in the bottom yay! Unfortunately this saw Divina, Crystal and SumTing Wong as bottom three, luckily for Divina her gorgeous mermaid-eqsue outfit saved her from lip syncing.
This week’s lip sync song was my fave Spice Girl song the iconic “Spice Up Your Life” but once again the lip sync was a bit lacklustre. The girls are so good at performing their own shows, perhaps the main stage throws them off and makes them ten times more nervous? Sumting just reminded me of my friends who do the dance moves when we’ve been out! We said goodbye to Sumting Wong who departed with ‘Love you long time’, however she did get a super special backstage farewell with Geri who declared how much she adored Sumting. That is the ultimate way to departure uniquely and probably made it little more easier for her to handle. So with the end of Snatch Game, we’re now halfway through the competition.
