This week, there was a lot of RuPaul’s Drag Race. First, we got an episode of season 12, followed by Celebrity Drag Race, and finally, Untucked. Anyone else exhausted? This week’s episode of season 12 was definitely a juicy one.
The queens returned to the workroom after Jan‘s elimination and quickly mourned her loss. She brought so much energy to the cast. Jaida Essence Hall put it best, she was like if a Barbie, robot, and cheerleader had a baby. We miss you, Jan.
The mini-challenge was made for me. The queens had to dress up and behave like cats. It was truly insane. I don’t know how a winner was selected as they were all ridiculous, but Jackie Cox took this one home. It was a very smooth transition between mini and main challenges. The queens went from rolling on the floor in full cat garb to being told they were going to be debating for the role as first drag president.
Heidi N Closet said it best, they had to be funny as political politicians. Crystal Methyd mentioned that she thought they should use a lot of drag queen slang, while Jaida gave helpful advice to use political terms like… debate. Thankfully, they got some help from RuPaul and his special guest, Raven! Raven is a staunch political strategist who helped the queens with their political agendas. Like, encouraging Heidi to have her slogan be “eff the GOP, get into the GAP.”
While the queens were getting ready for the debate, they opened up about politics. Gigi Goode struggles with politics because they can leave you feeling hopeless. That is relevant now more than ever, but Jaida reminded us all that during times like this, it is more important than ever to be political. Jackie opened up about the struggles her mom faces being unable to travel to her home country because of the travel ban. Crystal shared her struggles with her parents supporting Trump. It was a heavy conversation for sure. Get out and vote, y’all!
On the mainstage, Ru was joined by Carson Kressley, Rachel Bloom, and Jeff Goldblum while Michelle Visage was on location for the debate. As they played the debate, the winner to me was clear. Jaida was hilarious. She vowed to make America confused again because she was confused by the other queens, claimed she loved to ride though she didn’t own a horse, and kept saying “look over there” to confuse everyone. I loved every second of it.
On the runway, the category was stars and stripes forever. Gigi, Crystal, and Jackie had my favorite looks. Jackie’s look was especially powerful. Seeing someone wearing a hijab on the runway was SO special. The judges’ critiques were what I expected. Widow Von’Du struggled in the challenge and it came out on the runway. Jackie’s constant Canadian jokes were a little much. Of course, it was Jaida who took home the much-deserved win.
In the end, it was Jackie and Widow who fell into the bottom two. They faced off to Katy Perry‘s Firework. Jackie brought her own plastic bag. Widow did great, taking a classic approach to the lipsynch. Meanwhile, Jackie brought fun and camp to her performance. It brought Jeff to tears. Jackie stayed while Widow sashayed away.
Next week, the queens make over Drag Race super fans! That’ll certainly be interesting. See ya then!
