I couldn’t think of a better way to bid farewell to 2020. With a new year came a new set of queens on our favorite show, RuPaul’s Drag Race! The constant Drag Race content has been a source of serotonin during a year of stress and uncertainty. Getting to know a batch of new queens is just what the doctor ordered!
The best part of every new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is watching the queens enter the workroom for the first time. Between getting to see their entrance looks and making first impressions, the episode could end after these opening few minutes and I would feel satisfied. This season, however, looked a bit different. The queens entered the workroom two at a time and promptly hit the main stage for a lip sync!
The beginning of the episode looked like the end of one. First, Kandy Muse and Joey Jay, the first queens to enter, were greeted by RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, and Ross Matthews. Due to COVID-19 regulation, the judges were separated by plexiglass. It was interesting and comforting to see the COVID protocols on set.
The first lip-sync between Kandy and Joey was to Call Me Maybe By Carly Rae Jepsen. I gotta say, this one was a bit boring. Kandy Muse came out on top and Joey got the Porkchop. Next came Denali and LaLa Ri. The pair faced off to When I Grow Up by The Pussycat Dolls. Denali performed in ice skates, which should have earned her the win! But, LaLa was victorious.
Next came Symone and Tamisha Iman. Both of these queens had such endearing personalities. Tamisha shared that she was cast for season 12 but could not participate because she was diagnosed with cancer. Within a year, she was on the main stage. What an inspiring story! Symone and Tamisha performed The Pleasure Principle by Janet Jackson. Symone came out on top!
Then came Gottmik, the first trans masc contestant on the show! They faced off against Utica Queen on the main stage to Rumors by Lindsey Lohan. This performance was a fun one and Gottmik ultimately took home the win. Next up was Rosé and Olivia Lux, who know each other in real life! Their song was Ex’s & Oh’s by Elle King. This one was campy and fun and ended in the favor of Olivia.
Last up was Tina Burner, Kahmora Hall, and Elliott With 2 T’s. Wait, that’s three queens? Sure, why not. All three of them faced off to Lady Marmalade. Kahmora, sister of season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall looked great in an original Bob Mackie but fell short to Tina.
The winning queens were enjoying cocktails in the workroom while all of the queens that were given the Porkchop were seated backstage and extremely confused. To quote the great Tamisha, the lady said go home. However, she was wrong. All of the queens had the chance to return to the competition after they gave one of their fellow queens the chop. The drama! Unfortuntely, that’s how the episode ended.
No runway, no challenge, just lip syncs and stress! Next week, we will watch the winning queens perform in a challenge and then hopefully get some answers with this whole elimination thing!
How did you like the format of this episode? Which queens stood out to you? Where do you think this twist is headed? Who will go home first?! Sound off in the comments below!
