Last week, RuPaul’s Drag Race took a break from the competition to give us a behind-the-scenes look at shooting a reality competition show during a pandemic. While it was interesting to see how the show came together during such a difficult time, it felt like we were robbed of the competition while it is in such an entertaining stage! So, we got rewarded for our patience this week. It’s Snatch Game!!
Before the competition break, there was no elimination. Both Symone and Kandy Muse were saved from elimination . The competition is getting stiff and everyone feels like they have something to prove as the winners circle began to crumble.
This week’s mini-challenge was a lot of fun. The queens were auditioning for a position in the punk rock band Panty Hose. Even RuPaul got in on the action in his suit that somewhat resembled a box of Good & Plenty. Tina Burner won the challenge and is now the frontwoman of a punk band apparently.
After the mini-challenge, the news was given: Its Snatch Game week! The queens began prepping their characters. Gottmik is going to be Paris Hilton, which sounded perfect. Rosé was taking on the character of Mary Queen of Scots and Kandy instantly doubted her. Another queen who got received some criticism from Ru and the other queens was Utica‘s Bob Ross and the squirrel wig. If we’ve learned anything over the last 13+ seasons of this show if they doubt your Snatch Game character you’re either going to kill it or completely bomb. There’s no in-between!
The contestants in this year’s Snatch Game were Drag Race royalty, Raven and Porkchop! This celebrity panel was a bit rough around the edges this season. Elliott with 2 T’s really fell flat with her Rue McClanahan, Olivia Lux‘s Tabitha Brown wasn’t great, and Utica’s Bob Ross was pretty painful. My favorite moment was when Symone got Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Lewis confused. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Symone’s Harriet Tubman, Gottmik’s Paris Hilton, Rosé’s Mary Queen of Scots, and Denali‘s Jonathan Van Ness were delightful.
As the queens were preparing to hit the main stage, Utica and Olivia had some beef. Utica said she thought Olivia was in trouble but apparently that isn’t what she said to her off camera. The drama fizzled quickly and the queens began talking about how involved some of their families are with their drag. Elliott’s 80 year old grandfather has come to some of her shows! Incredible!
The queens hit the main stage in front of Ru, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, and TS Madison. The category this week was fascinating fascinators. Symone had maybe the most powerful look in the history of Drag Race. The back of her fascinator read “Say Their Names”, with bullet holes in her back and her hands up. It feels silly to even acknowledge any other look. This left me speechless, even though I could talk about Denali’s skating runway look all day long.
It was time for the critiques. Kandy, Symone, and Tina were safe. The tops and bottoms this week were easy to predict. Olivia, Utica, and Elliott were in the bottom, while Rosé, Denali, and Gottmik made up the top. Rightfully so!
In the end, it was Gottmik who conquered the Snatch Game! As for the bottom two, it came down to Elliott and Utica. The song was strategically Fascinated by Company B to fit the runway theme of course. Utica was so much fun to watch. It was pretty clear she was going to take home the win. Elliott fought hard, but it was her time to go.
Next week is going to be a good one. I think we’ve all been wondering how the makeover challenge would go down during a pandemic. We finally get answers! The queens are making over each other! That will be a good one. Can’t wait to chat with you then!
