This week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars was a fun piece of nostalgia for all of us who remember watching Total Request Live on MTV every day after school. It was a lot of fun!
The episode kicked off with the queens returning to the workroom with two legendary legend stars up for grabs. Both Raja and Jinkx Monsoon had the option of giving the stars out to their fellow contestants. Raja chose to give her extra star to Yvie Oddly, her first of the competition! Jinkx handed hers off to Jaida Essence Hall.
After the adorable sisterhood of star gifting ended, RuPaul announced that the queens would be forming Y2K girl groups and performing on a throwback episode of TRL. They would be recording verses for a song, styling looks, and putting together choreo.
The queens had to put themselves in groups but they ended up just splitting down the middle in the line they were standing in when RU was in the room. The song Titanic was going to be performed by Trinity “The Tuck” Taylor, Raja, Shea Coulee, and Monet X Change. Together Forever would be performed by Jinkx, Yvie, Jaida, and The Vivienne. Though Viv wasn’t so happy about the pairing.
Team Titanic called themselves MSTR, like their initials but also mister. They made up a storyline that Yvie was in their group and they were called Mystery, but she went solo. Meanwhile, the other team called themselves The Other Girls, the girls who didn’t make it in the other girl groups. They were taking their storyline to the next level, all being rejects who are bad at being in girl groups. It was so good.
As the queens were recording their verses, I believe the editors deserve an Emmy for the sequence of them singing. It’s so good. As for their dancing, not so good. However, it came back around when they were getting ready to hit the main stage and they were goofing off. Some were doing yoga, and others (Jinkx and Jaida) were making their legendary legend stars kiss.
Ru was joined on the main stage by Michelle Visage, Ross Mathews, and Tove Lo. First up was MISTR. RuPaul was already cackling before they even started, which was a good sign for them. It was cute but not as good as Ross’ role as Carson Daly. Up next was The Other Girls and they were wild but in a good way. I genuinely love all these queens.
On the runway, the category was night of 100 Dolly Partons, which was perfect. Everyone looked great! You could tell that everyone was having a blast and put a lot of effort into finding unique Dolly looks to bring to the runway. Loved it. 10/10.
As for critiques, everyone got great feedback because it is RuPaul’s Best Friends Race. I love the energy from both the judges and the queens. Ugh, so good. Anyway, everyone did well and I love this season.
In the end, Yvie and The Vivienne were the top two. Viv was blocked, so she wouldn’t be getting a star, but Yvie grabbed her second star in one episode! The pair faced off for their chance at a cash prize and the power to block another queen to Why’d You Come In Here Looking Like That by Dolly herself. Yvie brought the comedy to the performance while Vivienne was more classic. Viv won and chose to block Jinkx yet again!
It’s heating up, y’all! But I don’t want this season to ever end. Who else is with me? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!
