After 10+ years working behind the scenes as a song stylist for some of your favorite artists, tv shows, and movies, LGBTQIA+ music maven Ash Gordon has taken the leap into the spotlight with her own debut double album, Ash Gordon & Ash Gordon II.
This album is chock full of collaborations from drag legends like Trixie Mattel, Alaska Thunderfuck, BONAVEGA, Bob the Drag Queen, and many others, collectively the album provides sixteen psychedelic songs that perfectly encompass Ash’s lipstick garage-rock vision.
Opening the album with Alright, Alright, Alright it has the ability to transport the listener into a cool Indie movie universe, think Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. You want to be the cool girl in the band.
Her debut single Cosmic Colours features my favourite Barbie girl Trixie Mattel. It’s so sweet and addictive, don’t be surprised if you end up with a cavity. It’s the ultimate time-travel sound, it’s the 00’s in a nutshell – the rise of Mean Girls, Paris Hilton, and low-rise jeans! Ash proclaims the song as her “favorite piece of ear candy ever.” This will be stuck in your head, harmonizing with yourself for days.
For me my personal favorite is the track YES! Think of it as a hype track to getting ready for anything, getting ready for work? YES! Ready to go out and dance? YES! This is the type of track that everyone will be wanting to know word for word when it plays in a club. The bass accompanying her low-toned voice compliment each other so well it’ll have you shouting ummm yes.
Ash Gordon II sees two more iconic collaborations, opening with Drag Race royalty Alaska Thundefuck who features on Everyone Is A Little Bit Gay, a tune to let you know that despite everything going on in the world that it’s okay to be yourself, as loudly and proudly as you wish to be.
“It’s okay to say gay. As much as you want,” shares Ash. “To your heart’s content. I want to celebrate the word and get people to giggle their way into realizing that sexuality is a spectrum.” With a beat like that along with lyrics and the purr of Alaska Thunderfuck, it’s an instant hit.
Closing off the two cd spectacular is I Want It and we end up in the ’60s transcending down the beach malibu barbie style rollerblading. Ash Gordon, I and II have the ability to take you on a journey through multiple decades, making you feel like the main character with your very own soundtrack. With the added collaborations it feels like a Christmas and birthday gift rolled into one on this jam-packed sweet treat of a CD.
