The drag world is moving a mile a minute these days! If you’re worried you might have missed some of the week’s biggest stories, we understand. That’s where The Week in Drag comes in, your weekly look at the biggest stories unfolding in the drag scene. From shocking moments that unfold in the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise to what’s going on in your local scene, we’ve got you covered!
In memory of Cherry Valentine
This week, we learned of the heartbreaking death of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestant, Cherry Valentine. She appeared in the show’s second season and won over our hearts though she was eliminated early. Aside from being on the show, she was a nurse fighting on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic and was featured in a BBC documentary called Cherry Valentine: Gypsy Queen and Proud.
Queens from across the Drag Race world shared heartfelt posts in honor of their sister. She will be extremely missed. All of us at Werrrk.com extend our deepest condolences to all of those who loved her as they grieve her tragic passing.
Hocus Pocus 2 features RuPaul’s Drag Race queens
If you’re anything like us, you’re probably a huge fan of Disney and the OG Hocus Pocus film. Now, the franchise is combining two of our loves by featuring Drag Race alumni Ginger Minj, Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté, and Kahmora Hall as the Sanderson sisters, with the real Sanderson sisters. Yes, all six of these icons will be acting alongside each other during a musical number in the new sequel, which you can stream today on Disney+. Even Canada’s Drag Race winner Priyanka got in on the fun, appearing in a commercial for the film.
Sending well wishes to Kornbread
The beloved star of both RuPaul’s Drag Race and Hocus Pocus 2, Kornbread, recently shared that she was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully, the cancer, which is in her small intestine, was caught early and is treatable. She released a statement on Twitter that she is “100% fine” and the cancer is “absolutely curable.” We are wishing our queen a speedy recovery!
Honey Mahogany is running for office in her native San Francisco and Drag Race alumni are stepping up to help her
Though best remembered for the shocking first-ever double sashay during Season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Honey Mahogany is stepping into the political circuit. She is running for supervisor in San Francisco’s 6th district. In order to help her win, Alaska and Willam held a telethon to raise funds for her campaign. The event featured queens like Heidi N Closet, Meatball, and Jackie Beat! If you are a US citizen who would like to donate, you can do so here. If you missed the event, you can watch it here.
Dragula’s Disasterina at LA’s CatCon
Do you love cats? What about drag? And performance art? Perfect, me too. This year at Los Angeles’ own CatCon, a convention celebrating cats and their people, Dragula star Disasterina and Sleazy Manzini will be at the Cakeland booth all weekend for photo ops and performance art. Before you ask, yes, I will be there, because of course I will.
