Season two started with raving reviews last week with the opening premier on the actual tv screens of British households and fans. Early favorites have arisen already as Black Peppa became popular amongst viewers. We said goodbye to Just May last week, and they wipe the first mirror message goodbye.
A little early this season but it’s time to spice up your life, the girlband challenge has arrived and they will be headlining their very own Yass-tonbury. This is one of my favorite challenges, it’s fun, it’s creative, we get a vibe of who’s who, and how can we forget the iconic ‘Break Up, ByeBye’ and ‘U K Hun’ numbers? As Black Peppa and Dakota Schiffer were the tops and bottoms last week they’re appointed team captains.
Dakota is strategically picking the musical and theatre queens, although could this work against her? On team Dakota, we have Danny Beard, Pixie Polite, Lefil, Cheddar Gorgeous, and the last to be picked Copper Top gets the chance to choose who they wish to join. Group names are discussed amongst each other and of course, some are not suitable for the BBC ultimately Queens of the Bone Age is chosen.
Team Black Peppa decided on the team name Triple threat is made up of Black Peppa, Baby, Sminty Drop, Starlet, and Jon Bers, are a good bunch of queens and I’m sure they’ll be okay being labeled the look queen group. The consistency of looks will have other girl groups shaking, Baby explains how she ‘somehow has a degree in songwriting.’ Not sure about viewers at home, but for those who have done degrees, we know the struggle of university, and nothing is forgotten unless squashed deep down to suppress the struggle. I have faith she’s going to be great, as will Black Peppa the duo will kill this challenge which I’m excited for.
Special guest Cathy Dennis is in the werkroom to give the queens a songwriting 101, Baby delivers her ideas and they sound incredible. Ru asks who her inspiration is in which she names FKA Twiggs as her main idol…. I have a feeling we might be seeing more of this storyline later.
Let’s get recording the brand new track with the creative duo Leland and Freddy Scott who of course produced the two iconic tracks “Break up bye, bye” and “U K Hun” Most of the queens smash the vocals. I loved how we saw Cheddar excel in their vocals after a blip with the hot cheese debacle with Cathy. Triple threat leads strong with Black Peppa and Baby the rest are good, but in comparison to the others lack a little.
Throughout the episode, there’s no real indication of whos going to do terrible although it leans slightly toward Starlet, the shy storyline is rolling strong. This season there are so many loud personalities in that room, and contrary to legend drag queens don’t have to be loud-bellowing characters. Yet this challenge does require the personality to shine through their verses, and Starlet’s group s once again surrounded by loud people will be interesting to see how she preserves.
Are we ready to ‘Come Alive?’ Firstly Ru comes out in my favorite shade of Pink, it’s so stunning and as usual, wears it well. First out is the triple threats, their outfits are cohesive, the only thing that annoyed me and it’s so pedantic is the small clip in Jonbers hair, it was just there floating about.
Before Queens of the Bone Age come out, Sminty has a little cry about how she messed up. I didn’t see her make any mistakes, but of course a competition like this they’re going to be extra hard on themselves. Team triple threat have a little conversation led by baby and how they were all out of sync slightly with tiny mistakes.
Out next are queens of the bone age, and firstly I dislike green just like Michelle, however, I love how they all have a similar shade of green therefore it all looks like a 90s girl band. Mix and matched yet you can tell they’re a band. The members all worked so well together, and I loved the oversees especially as no one sang about snatching the crown, etc
This week’s category is ‘Neon Nights’, and I love this, although only two episodes in the runways are so diverse and reflect the different styles of the queens. I have a feeling I’m going to be saying how everyone is so good, so for me, my strong standouts are Cheddar Gorgeous the mushroom shape with those bright colors, Black Peppa, and that canary yellow hat and Danny beard who is channeling the stunning Juno birch. The group who wins the award is…. Queens of the bone age was a well-deserved win, I loved seeing triple threats’ faces as the winning team celebrate (shady.)
In untucked Queens of the Bone Age celebrate their win, and of course, ALL get a Ru-Peter badge this week. But with the return of Triple threat the atmosphere turns a little on edge, Baby truly has good etiquette, If you have nothing nice to say then dont say anything at all! I love starlets look, however, I feel we should all go through in life with the level of delusion she presented tonight. Her look is stunning, she has a great aurora but her performance in the challenge was rigid. The judges agree and Starlet and Jon Bers find themselves lipsyncing for their life and we get an iconic girl band number in the shape of ‘About you now’ by UK girl group Sugababes. It would have been cool to get an FKA Twiggs number as she’s there, but following the theme of girl group week, makes sense. For me, Jon went that little bit further emotionally with the song than Starlet but another death-dropping lipsync. Unfortunately, we say goodbye to our little Starlet giving an icy exit, as she walks off the stage without a goodbye.
So week two down, who’s number will youtube streaming Triple Threat or Queens of The Bone age? Both are available on Itunes and Spotify. Catch RuPaul’s Drag Race UK every Thursday at WOW Presents Plus in the United States and on BBC Three and Iplayer in the UK.
