The Frock Destroyers are here to question if you’ve been naughty or nice with their new Christmas song Naughty List. The new single, released on 25th November via World of Wonder Records, is the ultimate gift for fans everywhere. 2022 has seen another year full of frock destroying, with the March release of the docu-series Frockumentary so with Christmas approaching, it’s only correct we talk Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea and Divina de Campo about festivities, new music, and why they’re on the naughty list.
Kirsty: So congratulations on the new single “Naughty List” which is out in time for Christmas. Did you take inspiration from any other Christmas songs, past or present? What made you want to create a Christmas song?
Divina de Campo: I did, I sent it through as an idea because we’re working with Leland, which was a really, really exciting thing to do as he’s such a genius. And he knows exactly what to do to get the absolute best out of us. So he was like, have you got any tracks you really like? I’m obsessed with Christina Aguilera’s Christmas album, so I sent a few of those and a little bit of a Destiny’s Child Christmas album.
Baga Chipz: Don’t forget Geraldine McQueen, a classic (laughs)
Blu Hydrangea: Obviously, the UK charts always have a fight for the number one at Christmas. It’s had some wild and really interesting songs that have reached that top spot. So we thought well why not? Why not put our hat in the ring or a brand name in the ring?
Divina de Campo: And it is like my favorite time of the year, Christmas. How could we not?
Kirsty: When did the recording and writing process for this song begin?
Blu Hydrangea: We’d been writing for a month? Just after summer around August, or September. We had the initial talk and now we’re here recording it. I think we talked about it while we were in Australia, didn’t we?
Divina de Campo: Yes, so we had a chat in Australia in August and then we were like, we should message about this and get things moving.
Baga Chipz: The good thing about World Of Wonder is that they just get things going. As soon as we went through the idea, it was literally like a whirlwind.
Kirsty: Artists start promotions for Christmas Number One at Radio One and other places. Will you be campaigning for that Christmas number one?
Blu Hydrangea: Oh my god absolutely, yeah. We have to.
Baga Chipz: I’m going to chain myself outside BBC Radio one until they let us in. (laughs)
Divina de Campo: Bring it on, we are ready baby!
Kirsty: How would you describe the track in three words?
Baga Chips: Filthy, funky, and…
Blu Hydrangea: I was going to say naughty (laughing)
Baga Chipz: Okay so Filthy, festive, and…
Divina de Campo: Fresh…. (laughs)
Kirsty: Frock?
All: Yes, frock! (laughs)
Kirsty: So, as the single’s called Naughty List. What is the naughtiest thing you’ve done this year?
*Collective gasp*
Kirsty: You can say it, it can be 18+ rated (laughs)
Blu Hydrangea: Well mine is sending Pangina Heels home. (laughs)
*Collective screams*
Blu Hydrangea: Surely that’s the naughtiest one, what about you Baga?
Baga: Probably half the wigs I wore on drag race (laughs) I look back and think what the hell was I thinking? I looked like a cross between Betty Boop and Shirley Ballas.
Divina de Campo: I have a lot of sex, but I’m not particularly naughty. I steal towels every now and then is that naughty? Oh god that’s not even naughty that’s boring, isn’t it? (laughs)
Kirsty: If you had to make a playlist of Christmas songs to perform as a group, what three would you choose?
Baga Chipz: (bursting into song) It’s christmasssss “Merry Xmas, Everybody” (by Slade) with a big backing track of (more singing) hear come the bells (on repeat while Kirsty still has no idea what song it is.)
*Collective laughing whilst all guessing the song*
Baga Chipz: I also like it. Rump a bum- bum (“The Little Drummer Boy”, David Bowie featuring Bing Crosby.)
Divina de Campo: Oh I hate that one it’s awful.
Kirsty: It’s a Christmas classic though!
Divina de Campo: Oh god I can’t stand it (laughs)
Baga Chipz: What about *sings* over and over and over again. (By Geraldine McQueen )
Divina de Campo: Oh I like that one, it’s a good choice.
Baga Chipz: Oh, and “Mistletoe and Wine.”
Blu Hydrangea: She said pick three (laughs)
Kirsty: You could do a festival, a frock festival instead?
Baga Chipz: Oh my god yeah, Okay so I’ll go the here come the bells song.
Divina de Campo: I’ll choose “Its Christmassssss” by Slade.
Blu Hydrangea: It’s got to be a diva hasn’t it? I’ll choose Mariah Carey or Kelly Clarkson.
Kirsty: So you’ve got the new single out soon. This year we also saw the docu-series (Frockumentary) release. What else is on the list of things to achieve for you as a group? Is there a bucket list?
Blu Hydrangea: It has to be Eurovision, we really want to try for that. One of the Drag Race Espana winner is in the running to compete, have you seen that?
Baga Chipz: We’d love to do like a movie. You know Spice Girls: The Movie? We would do Frock Destroyers: The Movie. Traveling all over the world and then trying to get to our gig on time.
Kirsty: You’ll be appearing at RuPaul’s DragCon UK in January, what has your Dragcon experience been like, and do you have any tips for first-timers?
Baga Chipz: Oh, wow.
Blu Hydrangea: If you’re actually attending, I’d bring something to bring all your merchandise home and it’s going to keep it all safe and crinkle-free.
Divina de Campo: Like when you would do art, GCSE? Yes like those big plastic folders. One of those stiff bag things so that you can put all your side prints in there.
Blu Hydrangea: And if the drag queen is wearing a long wig, don’t give them a hug that’s going to tug their wig.
Divina de Campo: Alway goes for the waist, never go for the neck.
Baga Chipz: If you come to my booth, um then bring £40 Marlboro cigarettes, and Greggs festive bakes. (laughing) Meet and Greet requests.
Kirsty: What’s been the most memorable moment this year?
Blu Hydrangea: Oh definitely winning Drag Race UK vs The World for sure.
Divina de Campo: Winning Best performance in a musical 2022.
Baga Chipz: And me winning… fuck all (laughs)
Kirsty: It’s the participation that counts (laughs) (Collective laughing)
Baga Chipz: I am now the running face for McCain oven chips thank you very much. (laughs)
Kirsty: And what does 2023 hold for the three of you, individually and as groups?
Divina de Campo: Oh, gosh, loads. There’s so much going on. I got loads of theater going on, which I’m really excited about. And then hopefully we’ll get to make some more music together. I would personally love to do a Halloween tour with these two.
Blu Hydrangea: The three of us are the perfect Sanderson Sisters, you know Baga is the one with the lips (laughs)
Baga Chipz: Loads more gigs is what I would like to do. We want to get a Frock Destroyer world tour going.
Kirsty: And finally anything else you’d like to mention for our lovely readers?
Baga Chipz: To your readers. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. (laughs)
Blu Hydrangea: A merry Frocking Christmas.
