After saying goodbye to Bebe last week, it seems his presence will be sorely missed. The contestants discuss their sadness at seeing their friend go. But we keep it moving, we’re introduced to this week’s guest judge, and it’s the iconic drag king Spikey Van Dykey. Here to set the challenge in which it’s all about gender-bending. This challenge I’m excited to see what will be created, as such a wide spectrum can be played with. Even the judges are in their gender-bending outfits Lucinda and Barbuda as ever look incredible all in white.
During the walk round Lucinda delves into the contestant’s brains to see what ideas are being created this week. What I was interested in was Benjamin explaining his admiration for fellow contestant Dianna. He explains how she is someone he looks up to and his closest competition. In most shows such as this we see rivalry turned into drama, what this show does is instead highlight healthy competition. People we admire and see as competition should be used as fuel for wanting to do better for ourselves.
The photo session this week takes place in a dusty, dark attic the use of light will be the focus this week. Missy without a doubt stands out for this challenge, winning last week she has a photographer accompany her for the shooting segment. Taking charge and knowing the best angles to showcase the model to its best potential. The outfit itself is something straight out of Rock of Ages, it’s an 80’s concoction of a detailed blazer and flared trousers.
The judges echo my sentiments and Spikey vows to get that outfit from Missy, offering to buy it from her. Besides Missy, Gidget does a fabulous job of bringing the challenge to life. The use of fabrics matches the concept perfectly. It reminds me of something that would be worn in the movie Around the World in 80 Days its fantastic.
Another week of the contestants nailing the brief and going out of their way to make the judging tougher than last week. With that said decisions have been made and the top two this week are Benjamin and Gidget. Winning the golden sewing needle is Benjamin, his look truly showcased the beauty of creating art through design. Nitpicking for the bottom two and landing there is Kyle and Terrence. Judges’ emphasis strongly on the respect they have for their outfits and pride towards both contestants is heartwarming. We say a sad goodbye to Terrence who just missed the mark.
