Another week closer to crowning a new winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race and this episode was the makeover challenge! But before we get into that, the queens returned to the workroom following Dawn’s elimination. Sapphira Cristal described it perfectly: she fought hard but it was like a chihuahua against a pit bull with that song and Morphine Dior Love! I miss Dawn already. Sadly, however, Morphine did break her clavicle. Actually, that’s not true, because she thought her clavicle was in her leg in a spot that is all muscle, not bone. Good news, I guess?
It was a new day in the workroom which meant a new way for RuPaul to promote herself. RuPaul’s Drag Race Monopoly was out on the table and the queens started playing. I gotta say, I think I was sold on the game. Looks fun!
Ru herself entered soon after and announced the maxi-challenge. The queens would be putting the Drag Race Live! Pit Crew from Las Vegas in drag for the makeover challenge! The queens were very excited about it. I think I saw Nymphia Wind crying. Q was paired with Sebastian, Morphine with Miguel, Nymphia and Jonathan, Plane with Nick, and Sapphira with Mark. Oh yeah, and one more thing, the queens and their new partners would have to choreograph a breakout dance moment.
As the queens began getting in drag, they got to know the guys they were putting in drag. Nymphia learned Jonathan was straight, which made her fall on the floor. Even worse, he had a wife! She was losing her mind, it was amazing. Speaking of Nymphia, she gave an educational demonstration about tucking that I’m sure was extremely helpful to everyone in the room.
RuPaul came into the workroom to help guide the partnerships. She advised Sapphira to name her partner Shakira Cristial. Plane made her go into an asthmatic laugh with the name Lazy Susan. The girls were girling.
It was time for the queens to get their dancers in drag, but the hardest part seemed to be shaving the boys down. Sapphira had to change her outfit at the very last minute after it proved to be too heavy for the challenge at hand, so she was getting things prepared while everyone else was getting into drag. During the makeover experience, Plane and Nick, AKA Lazy Susan, bonded over how difficult it was to embrace being queer and come out of the closet, and how they managed to pursue their passions while finishing school for their families. It was a great conversation. Meanwhile, Q’s partner was reading all of the other contestants. They really are sisters!
On the main stage, Ru was joined by Michelle Visage, TS Madison, and Kelsea Ballerini. On the runway, I thought Nymphia nailed this by a mile. I know they didn’t want to see Nymphia in yellow, but I think we should let her have her favorite color, OK? Sapphira and Shakira looked great, but the family resemblance struggled due to the last-minute costume change. Plane got a lot of positive critiques, but I wished their costumes were opposite colors or something. It felt a little too matchy-matchy to me, although they looked great!
Plane won the challenge, while Sapphira and Morphine fell into the bottom two. The pair faced off to Miss Me More by Kelsea Ballerini. It was a great performance, and both queens did amazing, but in the end, Sapphira stayed while Morphine sashayed away.
These eliminations are not getting easier! What will we do without Morphine’s commentary? I’m not ready for this season to end!
