Kiki Snatch has left the building, and what many fans felt should have been a double save last week thanks to that lipsync. But alas, there can only be one, and Actavia survived, and with a messy attempt at wiping the mirror message, kicks off a brand new week. And a week of legendary challenges, Ru enters the werkroom armed with some fetching glasses. As reading is what? Fundamental. There are some strong reads, and then there’s Rileasa Slaves who instead of reading the long winded jokes would seem more like compliments? The winner of the challenge is La Voix!
The time has come when we see some drag queens soar and others grimace out of fear. It’s the Snatch Game! We have our first double-character condodrum already—both Charra Tea and Lill plan to play Queen Victoria. Enter Ru, who does his famous walkroom talk and gives his advice for each queen and on their character choices for the game. We’ve got a mix of strong picks, some questionable, and then the weird, which comes from Ru himself (surprise!). He suggests Charra change Mary Poppins into an Irish character, someone like Nadine Coyle of Girls Aloud fame. Meanwhile, Actavia plans to act as the Welsh Dragon, though Ru recommends Michael Jackson, as we saw in the Love Actually skit a few weeks ago.
La Voix wows everyone around her by choosing Liza Minelli, and although we’ve seen Liza on US and Down Under Snatch games before, I have a feeling she’s going to knock it out of the park. She even brought a scrag that once belonged to Liza, thanks to her friendship with Liza’s ex-husband David Guest.
This week’s Snatch game panel features childhood nostalgia icons Rachel Stevens and Jon Lee of S Club 7! Chances are, everyone has heard at least one of their pop classics in their lifetime; if not, go listen now! This might just be one of my favourite snatch games yet, considering my love-hate relationship with the format, this one had a lot more highs than cringe factors. Kyran Thrax and La Voix became comedy gold, bouncing off each other beautifully as Elvis Presley and Liza. Meanwhile, Charra manages to pull it out of the bag by blending Nadine Coyle as Mary Poopins from the past UK Rusical, making Ru howl with laughter—the ultimate recipe for success.
Actavia also brings in plenty of laughs by incorporating Michael Jackson into one of her answers. On the other end, we see Rileasa is clearly struggling and leaving everyone confused by her character choice. Though she looks stunning dressed as Rhianna, for some reason she’s chosen to portray the young girl she played in her Love Actually skit several weeks ago. It does not work at all. Another queen on the struggle bus is Chanel O’Connor, as she portrays the beloved drag icon Coco Peru. She’s not bad, but starting out with an Australian accent doesn’t bode well, and it never really took off. Overall, though, it’s a very strong snatch game that was packed with plenty of strong performances, which will make it hard to choose a winner.
It’s time for the runway, and Ru looks sensational in a pink gown—the fluffy boots are to die for! Guest judge Amanda Holden joins the panel for this week’s runway category: Doctor Who Is She? The queens have been asked to create their own Doctor Who-inspired characters. Which is such a fun idea, paying homage to such a staple in British TV. A lot of creative ideas appear on the runway, and some are executed well, even if some do read as a Blue Peter school project. For me, Rileasa looks fantastic as a ghoulish ghost-esque, and Marmalade looks like a regal villain. Lill walks out and is the most geekish politician, making everyone laugh, prompting Alan Carr to declare that this is what his and Amanda’s child would like.
La Voix earns her second Ru-peter badge as the winner of this week’s challenge, as does Kyran, making it a well-deserved double win. These two are undoubtedly emerging as the front runners for the crown, and they could not be more different in terms of style, and that’s the beauty of UK drag. In the bottom two this week are Chanel and Rileasa , a horrible bottom two. This week’s lip-sync is to Something Kinda Ooh by Girls Aloud and is one of my favourites. I do think the queen’s bulky outfits did hinder their movements slightly, not being able to move that much to really go for it. Unfortunately, in the end, Chanel is told to sashay away, which is a real shame—I adored her shady personality. What did we all think of this week’s episode.
