Offering up ferocious and eclectic runway looks and being the first queen to win a Top 3 Lip Sync for the Win, Lill proved herself to be a queen to beat during RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 6. Following her departure, Lill continued to showcase her stunning runway looks on Instagram and made big plans for her post Drag Race UK career. I sat down to dish all things Drag Race UK with Lill following her elimination and we talked about everything from being part of The Family Gorgeous to the most memorable moments of her RuPaul’s Drag Race UK experience.
Michael Cook: First I must say, the latex Leigh Bowery-inspired garment you walked off the runway in is arguably one of my favorite looks ever seen on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.
Lill: Mine too though! I think that is probably my favorite look that I have ever done.
MC: That garment was representative of your run on Drag Race UK this season; completely stunning! How did it feel for you?
L: Thank you. It’s funny, even after the show there is still loads of work that you have to put in. Doing all of the photo shoots, which takes forever! At the end, it felt like eleven o’clock on Christmas night; you’ve opened your presents and you’ve seen what you got (laughs)!
MC: One thing about you is that no matter what the competition threw at you, you were able to take it and make it work. Has that always been the type of performer you are?
L: Yeah I am always game for a laugh. I mean, why would I sign up? You know all of the things that they’re going to throw at you and I knew that I would be rubbish at some of them. But I still was gonna give it a go, right?.
MC: We got to see a variety of perspectives off your drag. but the moment during the makeover challenge with your mom truly gave us a peek at the Lill behind the performer.
L: Aw she’s the best isn’t she?! It’s so fab that everyone knows how proud I am of her now!
MC: If you had to choose your rose and your thorn of your Drag Race UK experience, what would it be?
L: My best part of the experience was getting to meet all of the girls and getting to just make loads of new friends. I never thought that I would do that; it takes me ages to make friends usually. This time it was like “Oh my God, I am actually friends with these people”! I think that I realized that when we had a mirror chat with La Voix. We were talking about hyena penises-for some random reason (laughs)-and I thought “Wow I have actually made some friends here, this is great”! I think that was one of my favorite moments.
My lowest moment, you know it wasn’t really going home, I am kind of at peace with that. I think it the girl group challenge and the live performance of it. I really didn’t want to let my team down and didn’t want to look absolute tits, fall over, or forget the steps; it was just stressful
MC: You come from an extremely high profile drag family (The Family Gorgeous), with queens like Cheddar Gorgeous as part of your family’s lineage. Did Cheddar Gorgeous give you any advice to take with you on your Drag Race UK journey?
L: She didn’t really give me any advice to be honest. She wasn’t really supposed to know, I’m not saying that she did (laughs)! She did give me a pack with a lot of photos so I could remember all of the good times that we’ve had.
MC: That is a wonderful thing to have with you while you are alone for so long; not having your support system must be the hardest part.
L: Absolutely. I don’t even know how I went that long without a phone, I need my phone in my hand at all times! You know when a random thought pops into your head and you have to randomly Google it? I have about two hundred windows open in my phone with just random things like that. So for however long we were gone, I could not Google anything, it was like “How am I going to survive” (laughs)!?
MC: Before the era of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, there was the RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Ambassador competition, where RuPaul was looking for a UK nightlife ambassador. You were part of that challenge, along with other UK superstars like The Vivienne and your Season 6 sister La Voix. What do you remember about that experience?
L: It’s a bit crazy because we were all rubbish back then, we all looked awful (laughs)! I didn’t even have the potential to be on Drag Race at that point!
MC: Now that you have the world at your feet, what do you think you want to do now?
L: This month, myself Kyran (Thrax) and Rileasa (Slaves) are doing a tour around the UK. Then I am doing Danny Beard’s Christmas Cabaret, there will be a few years of that. After that it will be the New Year and Drag Con! I will be meeting all of the people that liked my pictures but in real life, that will be wild! Then after that, who knows?!
MC: In a world that is so chaotic so often, what is a piece of advice that you got from someone that has truly been useful to you during this time in your life?
L: You know, my friend Violet is part of The Family Gorgeous, her motto is that “Expectation is the enemy of happiness”. I think that it makes so much sense also. If you are expecting something to go badly, then it probably will go badly. If you expect too much from something, you are just not appreciating it for what it is. It is kind of about living in the moment and I think that’s really great advice. Don’t overthink things, just live!
