As we all emerge from our post-holiday family chaos and food comas, we can immerse ourselves in the brand new Crave Original series Slaycation (airing also on WOW Presents Plus starting December 31st, except in Canada). Six queens from the RuPaul’s Drag Race galaxy take up residence in a snow filled locale for an extended locale, with the expected drama and hilarity ensuing! I sat down with two of the Slaycation queens-Kerri Colby and Lawrence Chaney-to chat about their brand new friendship, what it was like living together for Slaycation, and where their next road trip just might be.
Michael Cook: It’s said that you don’t know someone until you vacation or them with them. Do you think the two of you know each other better now that you’ve actually done both?
Kerri Colby: Well we got married (laughs)! We know each other very well!
Lawrence Chaney: Yes, biblically (laughs)! We all learned a lot about each other and we learned how to live with that many people and those big personalities. We were in a big house, but it was also wasn’t that big when it’s us out of drag and our drag personas. I feel that the show is a lot, because there is drama but none of it is mean spirited. That drama is us learning to live with each other; that’s the growing pains that come with it.
MC: Kerri you have recently entered the world of DJ’ing. Did you manage to provide an amazing Slaycation soundtrack?
KC: I think we all cooked up some fun music tracks. It was so much fun to lay it down in the studio and work it out on the remix!
MC: Lawrence what do you think you learned about Kerri that you might not have known before.
LC: I am in awe of her. She is a beautiful drag queen, which the world already knows, but she is a beautiful person. She is funny, she is silly, she is goofy, there are no airs or graces, there is no grandeur. She is able to paint on this fierce ferocious drag persona that is very personable and friendly. I get very intimidated by these very pretty drag queens because that is not what I go for & it’s not what I’m channeling. She really just was so open and very funny, which people are going to see in this.
KC: I learned that Lawrence’s personality from television…I mean honey, RuPaul literally knows your name! You are such an infectious and amazing personality. I loved you on television, but that same person is you 24/7. You always have a quick wit about you, you are always going to listen intently, you’re going to borderline make someone laugh & cry because you are very attune and very attentive, but you also know how to bring in that good old Scottish kick. I feel like we bonded almost the most. I really got to immerse myself into the world of Lawrence and I loved it. I was running around cosplaying a Scottish diva the whole time.
LC: She had a bonnet on and she was going around saying “health & wealth” (laughs); we just got on so well. We went to the airport together and it just really clicked. We spent loads of time together in that horrible lounge, the food was weird; it was crazy. We really got on the most I would say out of the groups.
MC: Maybe a spin off where you each road trip across your own countries could be in the future? Kerri, where would you take Lawrence if you did a road trip across the pond?
KC: I gotta take Lawrence back home, so I gotta take her to Dallas, TX. We gotta try some barbecue and we gotta go get some cowboys honey! We’ll do a Dallas, TX stop and from there, we have to experience the coasts.
MC: Lawrence, where will you be taking Kerri when she comes to your side of the pond?
LC: I think the best thing about Scotland is the history, Scotland is really rich with history. I would take her to see some of the castles. I think American food is better than UK food, but our chocolate in the UK is sickening. I would take her to get some chocolate that is nice and does not taste like wax (laughs)! We would spend our time looking at castles and eating chocolate (laughs)!
