Bimini Bon Boulash is a name that many of us don’t need to hear twice in order to get excited. Like a rare unicorn in the wild, this artist graced the stage on day two of RuPaul’s DragCon UK to not only the adoring crowds but to perform on the girl group stage to reunite with the United Kingdolls. 2020’s U.K. Hun was without a doubt a track that dominated what was a horrible year for us all in 2020. It took the country by storm landing them on the Official UK Charts, and Bimini’s verse was even nominated for a BAFTA Tv award in 2022 under the Must See Moment category. That’s the power of drag.
What makes Bimini so intriguing is the impact left during their time on the show which was nothing short of legendary. Never letting anyone guess their next move, they inspired and educated those watching on about gender, especially her heartfelt chat with fellow contestant Ginny Lemon. Alongside that they gave perspective on the power of having a PMA (positive mental attitude.)
As WERRRK.com continues our streak of being live, in-person at every single RuPaul’s DragCon ever, I had the absolute pleasure of talking to Bimini, who let’s face is one of the most beloved queens from the franchise and industry. We spoke about their brand new fashion line BONYX, their drag roots, maintaining a PMA, and of course the United Kingdolls.
KB: To start things off lets talk about your new fashion label, BONYX. How did it all begin?
Bimini Bon Boulash: Yes! It all started just over a year ago. We started having big conversations about Latex because I’ve always loved it—it’s been a staple of mine for years. We just decided, you know what, let’s talk about it. Why not make it more accessible for everyone? So, after deciding to launch the label, I wanted to be as involved as possible. So I designed it all and then spent basically the last year working on them, creating the designs, going back and forth on fine-tuning details, creating samples, and wearing them myself. Now, it’s finally out there in the world for everyone to see.
KB: Does it feel like you’ve sent your baby out into the world for everyone to see and be like, Look, I did that; I made that happen?
Bimini Bon Boulash: (laughs) Omg, yes! Drag Syndrome is here today, and they are wearing one of the ties I created. Because in the past I’ve made some patches, but we wanted to expand that and create accessories too—like latex ties, for example. It’s just so amazing to see people out there wearing them!
KB: You’ve always been fashion forward; would you ever consider creating a fashion collection that showcases the best of your looks over the years?
Bimini Bon Boulash: That’s a great idea. Yeah, I mean, I’d love to do something like that. People always ask me what’s your favourite look to date, and I’m like, you know what, I honestly don’t think the best one has happened yet. The best is definitely yet to come for sure.
KB: Alongside your fashion label, you’ve also released quite a few singles. Which one are you most proud of?
Bimini Bon Boulash: I think when the EP finally came out in 2023, after being made back in 2021, it was a big moment for me. Looking at where I am now, there is just so much more to me now as an artist. I took a 10-month break to basically realign and focus on what I wanted to do creatively. As I come from the clubs, my roots are in the sweaty underground scenes, and that energy is exactly where I’m at with the dancing right now.
KB: Is that where you prefer to be? Because we don’t see you at DragCon. So when people heard that you were coming, it got quite a big reaction. Everyone was like, wait, have you heard Bimini’s going to be here?
Bimini Bon Boulash: (Laughs) Yeah, I think so. I absolutely loved it, and the reactions were amazing. But I started out DJing, and I’m actually DJing at Clapham after DragCon. It’s something that I did long before Drag Race. I come from the underground club culture scene, and I genuinely really love to do it. It’s just a lot of fun.
KB: We have to talk about what went down on the main stage today—the crowd that arrived for the girl groups was wild!
Bimini Bon Boulash: Oh my god, wasn’t it amazing! It was really good to be back out there and to see everyone again.
KB: The reaction to the United Kingdolls was especially special. How did you prepare to go back into that energy of a crowd?
Bimini Bon Boulash: Yeah, I know it’s insane (laughs). I really had no idea how mad it can get since this is actually my first DragCon; I’ve never been to one before. We’ve not done United Kingdolls in over three years, so to come back today and receive all this love and to also be back with all the Queens is just totally special.
KB: It really has been! When the UK opened up after COVID, the group went on a sold-out tour. What do you think made it so popular? I feel like it arrived at a time when everyone really needed it.
Bimini Bon Boulash: Absolutely, 100%. I think it was something people needed. It was a really fun song, and it was during us all living through the pandemic. It was a moment in pop culture when everyone needed a sense of freedom and felt free to enjoy something.
KB: If you were to release a single or go on tour again, people would snap up tickets in an instant. Would you consider doing a reunion or maybe releasing something new?
Bimini Bon Boulash: (laughing) Do you know what? I would like to now, so why not? Yes.
KB: And so besides the music, you also released an autobiography, which I really enjoyed reading. There’s so much depth to you; how was it writing such a personal book and having it out there for everyone to read?
Bimini Bon Boulash: Thank you so much! It was such an amazing opportunity, and I wrote it myself. It came out just as the show had aired, so I was asked to write the book. I do wish I could have spent longer working on it, especially since so much more has happened to me in the last four years. But yeah, you know what? I’m ready to write another one now(laughs.)
KB: In the book, you really have a great way of addressing life by focusing on the positive moments regardless of what you’ve experienced. Having gone through so much, you’re still incredibly creative and business-savvy. How do you manage all these things?
Bimini Bon Boulash: Thank you so much, but here’s the thing: life is so hard, and I’ve definitely faced my own struggles over the last few years. It’s been very up and down; mental health is so important and something we all deal with. With the recent news, it is so important that we show up for ourselves. For me, 2025 is all about focusing on my health and trying to just get back into a place of pure happiness. And it takes a lot of work, you know, and it’s not just about all PMAs and rainbows (laughs). But we can do it; I really believe we can. We can do it; that’s my main focus for this year, and I think being here with everyone, it’s just so beautiful. It’s nice to just be here and be part of this sisterhood. It’s really beautiful.
KB: So what else have you got coming out this year?
Bimini Bon Boulash: Obviously now I’ve got my fashion line, but I also host my own podcast called The Pieces, where I sit down and talk to various people of all identities and their experiences. We’ve already had some amazing guests already, like Joe Lycett, Clara Amfo, Bel Priestley, and The Slumflower, and there is so much more coming. Stay Tuned!
KB: How do you find the time to do all this and maintain a balance?
Bimini Bon Boulash: (laughs) Oh my god, let me tell you, if I sit at home for too long, I get bored. (laughs) We’ve just got to keep pushing forward and keep going.
