The day was finally here, the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17! I loved seeing all the queens walk down the runway again. These looks were beautiful! I especially loved what Arrietty, Suzie Toot, Jewels Sparkles, Lexi Love, and Onya Nurve were wearing. Don’t worry, if you missed the finale, RuPaul did indeed lip sync.
For the first time in grand finale history, RuPaul was making the top four contestants sing their own vocals for their final performance. She didn’t give us a girl group challenge so she tried to make it up to us with this, I think. They would be performing in front of Ru, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, and Jamal Sims. Where on earth was the hilarious Ross Mathews and TS Madison?
First up to perform was Jewels, and her number was very cute. I loved seeing the eliminated contestants watching her from the audience. It was so sweet to see her parents again, who have supported her from the beginning of her drag journey. Jewels kicking off the show with her story and loving family was a wholesome way to kick off this finale!
Then came Lexi, my very obvious favorite of the season (sorry, everyone). She brought back her roller skates! I know I am biased, but how good was that performance?! Lexi’s drag mothers were there, and their story about finding each other during a dark time was very special. I just adore her!
Onya came next, and she is such a superstar. When it comes to star quality, she has it more than anyone else, I think. Her performance was so good. Her parents were in the audience, and it was heartwarming to see her dad, and can we talk about how much she looks like her beautiful mother? Wow, I love this entire family. Absolute angels, the whole lot.
Last but not least was Sam Star. Another great performance! She did a lot of cool tricks during it, but I think the best part was seeing her mom’s reaction in the audience! I also loved hearing her talk about how much she loves going to the bar to see Sam, and how she has become a mother figure to other queens. Such a sweet family.
After watching a highlight reel from the Untucked season, Xunami Muse and Sapphira, the current reigning Miss Congeniality, came out to crown this season’s winner. Crystal Envy took home the title!
Before a winner was crowned, the true queen, Liza Minelli, was honored. A true icon, gay rights activist, and incredible human, Liza was the first to get the Giving Us Lifetime Achievement Award. It was amazing to see her interacting with Ru, and Suzie crying in the audience. Hearing her talk about life at MGM with her parents had the film nerd in me freaking out. This was the best part of the finale!
Then it was time to bring out our current reigning queen, Nymphia Wind! She looked INCREDIBLE! She told everyone to look under their seats where they received a banana! You just love to see the Oprah of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Out came the top four queens, who would eventually become the top two. Onya and Jewels advanced to the final two. Thankfully, we got to see one more beautiful Lexi look before she was eliminated.
RuPaul did us all a wonderful favor and made Onya and Jewels face off to Abracadabra by Lady Gaga. Onya put her own spin of Gaga’s choreo and Jewels also did a great job! I loved every second of that.
Onya WON! What an incredible season she had. She deserved every inch of that win!
