With a fantastically cheeky drag name and a personality to match, Pasty’s time on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK was brief, but impactful. The Cornwall queen might have missed out on some of the most famed Drag Race challenges, but she has big plans post Drag Race UK, and can now officially say she’s sewn her first ever garment (which she wore on the Drag Race UK runway)! I sat down to chat with Pasty post-elimination about her Drag Race experience, the Season 7 sisterhood, and the famed UK show she wants to make a splash on next!
Michael Cook: While you may have been the first eliminated from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 7, one thing is certain; your first garment ever sewn as well as reaction from the fans are both something to be proud of!
Pasty: Thank you! You know it is something that has really melted my heart and made me really happy. Let me tell you, I was gagged as well!
MC: After never sewing a full garment before, how did you craft a full and complete garment like that in that amount of time?
P: I had a sewing pattern and a dream (laughs)! It was extremely stressful and I did have some emotional moments, and they did show that when Bonnie (Ann Clyde) was giving me a bit of a pep talk; the inner saboteur definitely came in. I am still super proud of myself, when I watched the episode I was gagged about how good it actually looked. Not so much the hair and makeup, but the outfit as a whole, the fact that it was fitted to the hips and to the corset, I was very proud of myself.
MC: It’s funny you mention the inner saboteur because no matter how many times we hear RuPaul talk avoid trying to avoid it, getting in your own head and falling prey to it sometimes is unavoidable, don’t you think?
P: Oh completely. I think that is what happened with me, I would agree, it fully did. When you’re there it may get put into a one hour long episode, but you are there for eight hours sewing over the course of two days. When you watch it, you’re seeing highlights. It was very stressful for me, but I feel very proud, despite getting eliminated, I am very proud of what I did.
MC: What do you think your rose and thorn are of your Drag Race UK journey?
P: The thorn was probably the second that I left the Brit Gala challenge, I was like “I flopped that”. Especially since I had to keep pulling the dress up, and we were on stairs. It was shower curtain dress and it was crunching, it wouldn’t flow and stuff like that. I would say that my rose from the whole season are the girls, so the entrances and getting to meet people. It was really lovely to be in this sisterhood now, what an amazing opportunity for us to have. Our cast, we all get on, which is nice.
MC: When did you know that drag was going to be more than a hobby and would be the passion you would follow in your life?
P: I used to go watch a competition called The Gold Rush, it was a drag show that happened every week. My friend entered the first week at the pub that it was at in Season 1. I went and watched Season 1, then watched Season 2 and my good friend Taylor Trash, it was her show, she told me “you’re entering Season 3”. I entered, I won the audition round in Season 3 against nineteen other people and then I made it through the whole competition and made it to Top 4! My drag career really shot off over the course of ten weeks, it was crazy!
MC: What is a Drag Race UK challenge that you wished you had gotten to stick around to participate in?
P: To be honest, a lot of them. My main one was Snatch Game, I would loved to have done Snatch Game. The comedy challenge, the acting challenge.. I would love to have done a Rusical. I’ve always loved musicals and the fact that I can’t sing, it wouldn’t have stopped me; I’m still going to sing as best that I can.
MC: You have a tremendous platform in front of you now, so what is one thing that you absolutely want to do in your post Drag Race career?
P: I would absolutely love to do The Great British Bake Off! I think that would be so camp if Pasty was on The Great British Bake Off, I would love it!
