WERRRK.com has proudly partnered up with the Austin International Drag Festival this year and we have been given the privilege of announcing this year’s headliners first! We are so excited about being a part of this amazing event this year and we cannot wait to bring you all the fabulous drag artists that are going to be headlining this year!
Our next headliner comes to us all the way from Bangkok by way of California! We are very excited to announce that Genie will be headlining the Austin International Drag Festival this year! (Get your tickets here and join us in Austin this fall!)
Congratulations on being named a headliner Genie! How did you get involved with the Austin International Drag Festival and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Thank you! Well I’ve been following the festival for a long time, and I’ve always been blown away by the level of talent and artistry on display. So…I squealed quite loudly when I found out I was going to be a headliner this year! I was actually in a meeting at the time, so that was embarrassing. Totally worth it though.
For me, 2019 is about supercharging my growth as a drag artist and performer after being on Drag Race Thailand. Appearing at RuPaul’s Drag Con LA and NYC is part of that. Booking shows across Asia this summer is part of that. And headlining Austin International Drag Festival is a HUGE part of that. Meeting fans is another reason I’m excited to be in Austin. I’ve been lucky to get love and support from such lovely people all over the world. I hope to see some of them in real life at the festival!
For those people living under a rock, can you tell us a little bit about Genie and your drag?
So I was cast on Season 2 of Drag Race Thailand, the first official international spin-off of RuPaul’s Drag Race! No spoilers, but I was proud of how far I made it on the show, and I was proud to have stayed true to my kind of drag the entire time. I love to go for a concept in my looks. An animal, a toy, a household object, an element in nature, a supernatural being. I like to create looks that are playful or strange. Sometimes that manifests as a cute character. Other times, it’s a creepy creature. And if I do glamour, it’s always with a twist. I think I’m a cartoon that came to life by some wicked magic. Anyone who’s curious should check out my glowing cloud look, nuclear hazmat gown, lucky cat costume, and teddy bear entrance look! Those are some of my favourites.
We can’t wait to see what you’re planning on bringing to the stage in Austin! Can you give the WERRRK .com universe a little tease of what’s to come this fall in Texas?
There’s so much I still need to decide! But I can say, get ready for a full meal. I’ll be serving Asia-inspired eleganza for dinner. Sweet kawaii cuteness for dessert. And a glamorous champagne cocktail for a drink after. It’s going to be so yummy!
