I need you to stop whatever you’re doing, plug in your headphones and get all the way into what I’m about to share with you…because it’s that good.
The other day, my boyfriend texted me a screenshot of “To Die In L.A.” by Lower Dens playing on Sirius XM. I thought he was tipping me off to something I’d love, but in fact it was just a reminder for himself to check the band out later. By the time I found that out, it was too late…I’d already watched the video probably 10 times and downloaded & listened to the single at least…40.
I was hooked.
I’m not going to bother trying to tell you who they sound like because I can’t think of anyone that adequately covers it…which is a good problem to have. The music reminds me of a Californian summer night. And the vocals? I just can’t get over Jana Hunter‘s warm, wide, sad voice. I don’t think you will either.
I checked out their previous album and by comparison it seems that the production value on the new work has elevated. The music is sharper, less dreamy with a tension not heard before. And those vocals! The harmonies! They’re enough to make your heart burst.
Let me know what you think in the comments below. Also make sure to pick up their album when it comes out and see them live if they’re in a town near you. This is definitely an indie band that will have my support and I hope yours, too.
The new album “Escape From Evil” is out March 31st via Ribbon Music. Pre-order on iTunes today.
