Sister Indica Says WATCH THIS: EastSiders

Hi Friends,

Yeah, I know that I’m a bit late to the game with this one but I can’t possibly know about all things at all times.  I mean, how more annoying would that make me?  As my best friend Big Mel says: “You can’t have it all, babe!”  So, here I am…a few years late but I still showed up to the party and I can’t wait to put my stamp of approval on EastSiders…which came out in 2012.

On Season One, from the show’s website:

“What happens after the world ends? Written and directed by award winning playwright Kit Williamson, “EastSiders” explores the aftermath of infidelity on a gay couple in Silverlake.  When Cal (Kit Williamson) finds out Thom (Van Hansis) has been cheating on him with Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon), their relationship is turned upside down. Will the lies tear them apart or are they just stubborn enough to stay together forever?

Drunken outbursts and double standards abound in this dark comedy about the sad and funny messes we make out of our lives.   Cal’s best friend Kathy (Constance Wu) is always there for him with a bottle of whiskey in her purse, but she has her own problems with her nice guy boyfriend Ian (John Halbach), even if they’re all in her head.  Stephen Guarino guest stars as a party promoter throwing one last bash before the apocalypse.”

If you follow me on Twitter (and you should follow me on Twitter), you’ll know I’ve been very critical of the show LOOKING.  Not that one show has to compare to the other, but let’s get real: people make comparisons to things all the time so I’m going to do it. LOOKING had short episodes that didn’t offer a lot of movement in the stories of the characters…or compelling stories or characters for that matter.  I couldn’t stand anyone on the show!  On the other hand, EastSiders has movement, well-fleshed out stories and great character development while still maintaining short episode lengths.  And while these people do some pretty awful things to each other, you’re able to feel a connection to and empathy for each of them.  Not an easy feat…obviously.

In terms of LGBT programming, I held Queer As Folk on quite a pedestal.  It was the end-all-be-all of gay storytelling, but in my defense it’s all we had at the time.  Fast forward many years and the brilliant Cucumber made it come crashing down.  Now that I’ve found EastSiders I can honestly say that it is the most well-written, directed and performed LGBT-themed show I’ve ever seen.  EVER.

Usually when a show is LGBT focused (and in Queer As Folk’s case) we get bloated stereotypes and unrealistic storylines.  With EastSiders it’s so real, so believable and will have you toggling between laughter (it is a dark comedy after all) and tears.  Let’s just say that at season’s end, I was doing the ugly cry and if I dwell on it long enough, I could do it again but I won’t because…makeup.

Season One hooked me and I’m happy to report that Season Two (which features more characters – including RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Willam Belli) reached it’s Kickstarter funding and will be coming to us in the near future.

Have you seen EastSiders yet?  How do you think it stacks up against other LGBT-themed shows?   Do you resent my comparisons to (the awful show) LOOKING?  Did the show have you wishing Traci Lords was your Mom, slinging back gin martinis at lunch? Hit me up in the comments below or on Twitter!
