It’s the semi-finals, and a season that has flown by in the blink of an eye. We said goodbye to Choriza May last week, and the drama arrives when it’s revealed Hannah Conda chose Scarlett Envy to leave had she won the lip sync. Gasp.
However, it doesn’t go down well with Scarlett, who is hoping that Hannah doesn’t get the next win, as she sees the curtains should she land at the bottom. Let the storyline commence, and this week’s maxi challenge is a comedy challenge. The queens are to come together and celebrate the marriage of Michelle Visage and Graham Norton. They are to make speeches roasting the judges as well as their fellow queens. But before the wedding comes the hen party, and in their best quick drag to become every drag queen’s worst nightmare—a bride and her bridal party—bring on the bad dancing and the group woo’s. In a dance off, the final woman standing is Hannah, who gets to assign the order of the roast. She does a wonderful job of bringing joy to the werkroom. Taking her role seriously and setting up her own wedding recruitment services, she chooses to make the line-up flow as nicely as possible.
This season, the guest judges are getting much more involved, and this week comedienne Katherine Ryan is here to help workshop the queen’s material. As expected, Tia Kofi and Hannah are shining; La Grande Dame is learning unique ways to swear in British slang; Marina Summers isn’t failing; and then there’s Scarlett Envy, finding her footing slowly.
The challenge itself would be best described as a mixed bag of goodies; Hannah looks more like the mother of the bride in her 80’s dynasty get-up. But she smashes the speech and has everyone laughing. Which isn’t the case for the next three speeches. LGD had me cringing. I love her, but it didn’t land. Marina had some good moments, as did Scarlett Envy, but it was Tia who shone; she and Hannah were the bookends of the table, propping it up from falling. In her best bridesmaid dress, she looked the part and gave the best speech.
It’s clear who the tops are for this week, but the first category is ‘Take me up the aisle.’ I loved everyone’s interpretation. LGD presented a gorgeous chic couture number, and Marina once again brought her culture to the mainstage. In a tribal fit that represented the Philippines, the intricate detailing was gorgeous. On the other end of the spectrum, Scarlett decided to be a Las Vegas Elvis Presley, Tia an alien bride, and Hannah every inch a fairy-tale princess.
As previously stated, Tia and Hannah are clearly the winners of this week, and this leaves the remaining queens all at the bottom and up for elimination. Of course, as seen in past seasons, this would be an excellent way to get rid of the strongest competitor. However, this is a great cast of queens who want to beat the best and play fairly. The lip sync song this week is Euphoria by Loreen. Big props to whoever is in charge of the songs this season; they’ve been outstanding. Another tight performance, and Hannah has finally won her first badge. But her decision to send Scarlett Envy wasn’t that shocking, and to me, it was the correct decision.
This is it. We have our final four: La Grande Dame, Marina Summers, Hannah Conda, and Tia Kofi. A queen from each franchise represents their respective countries, and I think it’s fair to say this is the best top four we’ve had for a while. Any one of them deserves the crown; it’s a tough one to decide. So, who do YOU want to snatch the crown for Rupauls Drag Race UK vs. The World?
