THE WEEK IN DRAG with Emily Meow 13

Welcome to the first #THEWEEKINDRAG of 2017! There’s no rest for the wicked, or in this case the fabulous, as the world of drag has had a busy week already!

First up is of course our own WERRRK 2016 Drag Awards! This year there was a staggering 22 awards to be given, including the Lifetime Achievement Award (Lypsinka), Drag Horizon Award (Discord Addams) and of course Drag Queen of the Year (Biblegirl 666)! Congratulations to all nominated, all our winners and of course our wonderful Chiffon Dior for organising the awards! Special thank you to Poppy Fields who co-hosted the awards with Chiffon, and a HUGE thank you to all who voted! Almost 20,000 votes were cast for this years awards! Here’s to another amazing year in drag! Click here to see all the awards and their winners!

The end of 2016 also marked the end of Phi Phi O’ Hara’s phenomenal 365 Days of Drag! Phi Phi is quoted on the project to say “I started this for a few reasons but mainly to showcase what I can do and not what people thought I can only do based off of premade assumptions, but to also push myself to do something that has NEVER been done before“. From 90’s cartoon looks to stunning drag looks made on a dime, this project proved Phi Phi’s versatility and creativity cannot be harnessed! Congratulations, Phi Phi!

[ 365/365 ] #365DaysofDrag DONE!!!!! 1 year ago TODAY I started this project for a few reasons but mainly to showcase what I can do and not what people thought I can only do based off of premade assumptions, but to also push myself to do something that has NEVER been done before! I AM SO HAPPY with the positive response that I have received from all of this and I can't not thank you all enough! This was a hard year for a lot of us and I took a break after the entire All Stars situation to clear my thoughts and remind myself that you can't let people stop you from achieving any goal or dream you have set for yourself! I hope this project continues to inspire others to push themselves and reach beyond the sky…..there is no limit! Don't worry more is coming this year and I am doing a lot more cosplay, I have a list I never was able to get to this year that I will now! THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!

The past week also marks the announcement of an iconic collaboration. Queen of Burlesque Diva Von Teese is teaming up with none other than drag race royalty Violet Chachki. Dita posted on her social media: “I received a call once from the producers of RuPaul’s Drag Race, telling me that they had a contestant that was a big fan of mine that they wished for me to send a blessing to. That performer was the incredible @violetchachki and you probably know that she went on for a well-deserved win of the crown! I am very pleased to announce that my dear Violet will join the cast of The Art of the Teese in Chicago, Dallas, and Houston”. Buy tickets for Dita’s show here.

Also this week, RuPaul made an appearance on hit TV show “2 Broke Girls“. The girls run into Ru out of drag, then proceed to gush over how much they love “RuPaul’s Drag Race“. Watch the clip below!

The next story oversteps the past week a little, but it’s so incredible it would feel wrong not to include it! Drag Race alumni and actor Kelly Mantle has made history! They have been nominated for both Best Supporting Actor and Actress for the film “Confessions of a Womanizer”. This is an Oscar first to have a gender-fluid nominee be considered for both awards. This is huge for LGBT history and rights, congratulations Kelly! Check out Kelly’s interview on KWTV News 9 here!
